Forrester Research, Inc recognize the BPM suite space through three different lenses:
integration-centric BPM (Enterprise Service Bus)
document-centric BPM (Dynamic Case Management)
However, standalone integration-centric and document-centric offerings have matured into separate, standalone markets that include BPM plus much more.
BPM is now considered a critical component of Operational Intelligence (OI) solutions to deliver real-time, actionable information. This real-time information can be acted upon in a variety of ways - alerts can be sent or executive decisions can be made using real-time dashboards. OI solutions use real-time information to take automated action based on pre-defined rules so that security measures and or exception management processes can be initiated
Business process management (BPM) is a systematic approach to making an organization's workflow more effective, more efficient and more capable of adapting to an ever-changing environment. A business process is an activity or set of activities that will accomplish a specific organizational goal.

Components of a BPM Suite:
There are four critical components of a BPM Suite:
Process Engine – a robust platform for modeling and executing process-based applications, including business rules
Business Analytic — enable managers to identify business issues, trends, and opportunities with reports and dashboards and react accordingly
Content Management — provides a system for storing and securing electronic documents, images, and other files
Collaboration Tools — remove intra- and interdepartmental communication barriers through discussion forums, dynamic work spaces, and message boards

The Process Approach
The SIPOC is an acronym for Supplier (S), Inputs (I), Process (P), Outputs (O), and Customer (C). Every input to your process has a supplier that provides it to the process. Your business process converts the inputs into an output for a customer.
PDCA is an acronym for Plan, Do, Check, Act. If we overlay the “P” of PDCA with the “P” of the SIPOC diagram we get an easy graphical acronym for all of the elements that need to be present to ensure a complete business process management definition.
BPM is a business strategy to deliver business performance improvement and sustainability
BPM is a mechanism to assure alignment of all required actions and capabilities of the organization
BPM is driven by satisfying outside stakeholder requirements
BPM requires a commitment to marketing, communication, education, training, and collaboration
