Theme Essay: "The Outcasts of Poker Flat"
The first evidence of character in the story is on page 682. Mother Simpson was exiled because she did bad things. She became a good person by sacrificing herself for Piney and The Duchess. She didn't eat her rations for the past week.
The second evidence of character is on page 683. Mr. Oakhurst was exiled for gambling and became a good person. He made snow shoes for Tom and traveled down part of the mountain with him until it was time to part ways. Mr. Oakhurst traveled with him to ensure his safety traveling down the mountain.
The third evidence of character is on pages 684. John Oakhurst returns from his travel and adds wood to the wood pile. Then he shot himself so that Piney and The Duchess could survive longer. John was a strong man who did good and helped two people survive longer by sacrificing himself.
The first event in the story is on page 674. The group of men talking are looking for someone to take in. The men are looking for a bad person who needs to be brought to justice.
The second event in the story is on page 683. Tom Simson takes on a dangerous event and travels down the mountain through the snow to save the outcasts. This shows that a good person can help bad people.
The third event in the story is on page 679. Uncle Billy leaves Poker Flat with the mules containing the rations and supplies. John Oakhurst hopes that he comes back and does a good thing but he never does. If Billy returned then he would be a good person, but he is a good person still. He is a good person still because he left some of the rations there for them to survive.
