Transcript of The Universe: Essential question: Why is it important to study the universe?

The Universe
The Big Bang Theory

Huge explosion that created Everything
Happened
13.7 BILLION
years ago
Evidence: "
Background radiation
"

Essential question: Why is it important to study Outer Space?
Our Galaxy
Called the "
MILKY WAY
"
Spiral
Galaxy
The sun is
NOT
in the center
200 billion stars
Galaxies

Collections of
BILLIONS
of stars
There are several shapes:
Spiral
Elliptical
Irregular
Our Solar System:
4.6 BILLION
years old

4
ROCKY TERRESTRIAL
PLANETS:
Mercury
Venus These planets are all
Earth smaller in
SIZE
and
Mars GREATER in
DENSITY

ASTEROID BELT
separates the 2 groups of planets

4
JOVIAN GAS GIANTS
Jupiter
Saturn These planets are all
Uranus GREATER in
SIZE
and
Neptune smaller in
DENSITY
4 rocky Terrestrial Planets:
Asteroid Belt
Solar systems
1 star and everything that circulates around it
Planets
Moons
Asteroid belt (between Mars and Jupiter in ours)
Meteors/Meteorites
Comets
It takes about 8-9 months to travel to Mars
They are currently working on a "Plasma Engine"
that can travel to Mars in 40 days
The next closest star is so far away
that it takes light over 4 YEARS to
travel the distance. 4.25 light years.
The next closest star with a habitable
planet is 5x farther away than that!
Meteorites and comets will make
an
IMPACT CRATER
if they impact the Earth
How planets move:

Period of ROTATION
= a day

Period of REVOLUTION
= a year The farther out a planet is, the
LONGER
its period of revolution

Move in paths called "
Orbits
" around the sun
These orbits are
ellipitical
or oval in shape

Appear to move in
loops
across our sky
Saturn would float in water if we
could find a big enough tub
The
Universe
is
EVERYTHING
(and it's expanding)
Most things are moving
AWAY
from us
So lets practice..

How old is the Universe?

What is the proof that the universe began with a large explosion?

What is the name of this explosion theory?

How many planets do we have?

What is the name of our galaxy?

What shape galaxy do we have?

How many stars make up our galaxy?

Put in order of smallest to biggest: Galaxy, Universe, Solar system

Name the four Jovian planets.

What is a comet?

Another name for a day is a period of ________

Another name for a year is a period of ________

What separates the 4 rocky planets from the 4 gas giants?

What appears to loop across the sky? stars, comets, planets, moons

If a meteorite hits the Earth it will create an ____________________

True or False: The Sun is in the center of the Milky Way galaxy
4 Jovian Gas Giants
Dwarf Planet
COMETS
are balls of rock and ice that orbit the sun
"A dirty snowball"
