to what we see swimming today! Dolphin Evolution What is evolution? Evolution is the change in characteristics of a type of plant or animal over many generations. The earth has such a wide variety of life because this process of evolution has been occurring for billions of years. In the 1800s a famous scientist, Charles Darwin, proposed the theory of evolution to the world. This theory explains how we can have such an amazing range of life on our planet. Fossils The remains or evidence of any creature that once lived on earth. Generation Group of individuals born and living around the same time. Ancestor An early type of animal or plant from which others have evolved. Amphibious Living on both land and in the water. Adaptation How living things change what they do in order to survive in a particular environment. Basilosaurus Basilosaurus
Fossils This is an early ancestor of whales that was amphibious and lived near shore in shallow seas!
