Pulitzer Prize Winner
Pulitzer - "a collection of bold, skillful poems, taking readers into the universe and moving them to an authentic mix of joy and pain"(The Pulitzer).

Joel Brouwer from the New York Times says this book "first sends us out into the magnificent chill of the imagination and then returns us to ourselves, both changed and consoled" (Brouwer)

Lu, an Indie Lit Award judge, said, "I love the concept behind this poem and the way it really plays with some of the more common tropes of science fiction, like curved lines, but then makes its way into something unique" (Lu).
There will be no edges, but curves.
Clean lines pointing only forward.

History, with its hard spine & dog-eared Corners, will be replaced with nuance,

Just like the dinosaurs gave way
To mounds and mounds of ice.

Women will still be women, but
The distinction will be empty. Sex,

Having outlived every threat, will gratify
Only the mind, which is where it will exist.

For kicks, we'll dance for ourselves
Before mirrors studded with golden bulbs.

The oldest among us will recognize that glow— But the word sun will have been re-assigned

To a Standard Uranium-Neutralizing device
Found in households and nursing homes.

And yes, we'll live to be much older, thanks
To popular consensus. Weightless, unhinged,

Eons from even our own moon, we'll drift
In the haze of space, which will be, once

And for all, scrutable and safe.

Cultivating Her Interest
Describing her path to becoming a poet, Tracy K. Smith said "I remember a particular afternoon in the spring of my sophomore year, being blown away by the visceral impact of Seamus Heaney's poem "Digging." I felt transported by the sounds of language and compelled by the ways in which looking closely and remembering rendered an almost cinematic kind of transformation... I decided from that point that I wanted to commit to becoming a poet" (An Interview).

Participated as a Stegner Fellow (a 2 year workshop-based program) at Stanford University from 1997-1999
She has taught at the City University of New York, University of Pittsburgh, and Columbia University
In 2005 she joined the faculty of Princeton University where she is currently a professor of creative writing
Her father, an engineer on the hubble space telescope, passed away in 2008 and was the reason for this collection of poems
