What is a galaxy?
A galaxy is a group of stars, dust, and gas held together by gravity
A galaxy can be made up to a few 10 million stars to 100 trillion!!!
How many types of galaxies are there?
There are THREE... main ones at least

They are:
Elliptical galaxies
Spiral galaxies
Irregular galaxies
Spiral Galaxy
Spiral galaxies look like a spiral with arms coming out from the central region (also known as the bulge)
Spiral galaxies are made up of younger stars and actively form new stars, this is because Spiral galaxies are made up of a lot of dust and gas and so new stars can form
Spiral galaxies are shown to be a
bluish
colour because they are made up of younger stars and are very bright
Although Spiral galaxies are made up of younger stars and star formations is very active, as the galaxy gets older the gas burns out causing it to create less stars. This causes them to move on to the next stage… Elliptical galaxy. Spiral galaxies can be looked upon as the “younger” version of Elliptical galaxies.

the galaxy could have been absorbed by another galaxy because of its gravitational force and lost its shape like that or...
It could just simply be the in between stage of an elliptical to a spiral galaxy

The Milky Way
The milky way is located in the constellation, Sagittarius
Everyone knows the Milky Way but why...?
Maybe because it's part of our solar system
IT'S ANOTHER SPIRAL GALAXY
It's made up of 200-400 billion stars AND 100 planets
Although Andromeda in terms of size is the largest, the Milky Way is actually more massive in terms of mass
Milky Way started out as overdensities in the mass distribution of the universe after the Big Bang. Since then, the Milky Way has grown through accretion of gas directly from its galactic halo.
The Andromeda galaxy is said to be safe from our galaxy, the Milky Way for the next 5 billion years. It is said the two have a have a collision course, being next door neighbours and going about 112km/sec towards each other.

It's really just a group of stars
Two types:
Open Clusters
Globular Clusters
Open Clusters
made up of 50-1000 stars
Made up of young stars so...
They are usually found in Spiral or Irregular galaxies where star formation occurs
Though over time open clusters are disturbed in their course by a gravitational influence of a giant molecular cloud or other clusters as they move through the galaxy but...
As this happens, the stars part of the cluster will still travel in same direction even though they are no longer gravitationally bound, this is called stellar associations
Open clusters generally survive for about a few hundred million years because the stars are not tightly gravitationally bound but the bigger the cluster it be may be able to survive for a few billion years
Pleiades
An Open Cluster
Located on the constellation Taurus
Among the nearest star cluster to Earth
Formed within that last 100 million years
Estimated to survive for another 250 years until it desperses
Globular Cluster
Made up of 100,000-1,000,000,000 stars
Made up of old stars
arrange themselves in spherical shapes
mainly found at the galactic halo of a galaxy
are tightly gravitationally bound especially towards the center which is how they get their spherical shape
Messier 13 aka HERCULES!!!
Is a Globular cluster
Made up of about 300,000 stars
Located on the constellation Hercules
