Iran originally was run under a monarchy ran by the king, or shah. The last Shah of Iran was Mohammad Reza Pahlavi.

After Revolution
Iran became a theocratic republic after the revolution. The current supreme leader is Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. There have been only two supreme leaders in Iran since the revolution. First elected after the exile of the Shah.
Post-Revolution: Theocratic Government's Role in Society
The Shah was the head of the Monarchy. He and his family were the highest caste in the caste system. His over spending of money and increasing wealth divided the class even more then they already were. This is one of the reasons the revolution occurred.
The current supreme leader's role in society is to executive administrator of the government and leader of the armed forces. This role is for life. Has religious influence as well.
