Transcript of The Journey
1. If you could travel anywhere in the world- where would you go and why?
2. If you were the star of a well-known movie- who would you be and why?
3. Pick a song title that describes you- or make up your own- how and why does it describe you?
4. If you could invite any person that has ever lived to dinner (the dead would NOT come back as zombies!) who would you pick and what would you discuss over dinner?
The Catholic Church at Large
We have no pope!!!
Who will be next?.....
We are awaiting a new priest!
A journey with Christ in the desert
MY LORD GOD, I have no idea where I am going. I do not see the road ahead of me. I cannot know for certain where it will end. Nor do I really know myself, and the fact that I think that I am following your will does not mean that I am actually doing so. But I believe that the desire to please you does in fact please you. And I hope I have that desire in all that I am doing. I hope that I will never do anything apart from that desire. And I know that if I do this you will lead me by the right road though I may know nothing about it. Therefore will I trust you always though I may seem to be lost and in the shadow of death. I will not fear, for you are ever with me, and you will never leave me to face my perils alone. - Thomas Merton
YOU ARE HERE
The search for God is the project of a lifetime.
Where exactly is here?.....
CCC 1074: "The liturgy is the summit toward which the activity of the Church is directed; it is also the font from which all her power flows."
CCC 1075: In the liturgy we proceed from the visible to the invisible, from the sign to the thing signified, from the "sacraments" to the "mysteries."
....So what does this mean about how we should use our minds, hearts and bodies during the liturgy?
The one-hour Eucharistic fast:
Q: Does chewing gum break the fast?
Does God care how you dress?
The clothes you choose says something to God and to the people around you about what you think of the Mass!
The Church local,
St. Matthew's Parish:
aka "Maundy Thursday": "Mandatum" meaning "Commandment"
"A new commandment I give unto you: That you love one another, as I have loved you, that you also love one another." Jn 13:34
The Last Supper
From the earliest days of Christianity, no Mass has been celebrated on Good Friday- making it the only day of the WHOLE YEAR when Mass is not celebrated on earth!
Instead, the Church celebrates a special liturgy:
account of the Passion according to the Gospel of John
a series of intercessory prayers
Veneration of the Cross: coming forward and kissing the Cross
Since there was no Mass, Hosts that were reserved from the Mass of the Lord's Supper on Holy Thursday are distributed instead.
Fast!! From midnight on Holy Thursday until noon on Holy Saturday
A fast of joyful anticipation: Does a bride feel hungry on the morning of her wedding? No! Likewise, our fast is not of penance but of joyful expectation!
The most solemn day of the Church year
Church observes Christ's crucifixion from noon until 3 p.m.
Make it holy: Try to go for an hour without talking; fast from food; your phone, music, watch "The Passion of the Christ"
of the year!!!
Catechumens are Baptized & Confirmed
Candidates are Confirmed
What sorts of things do you dress up for?
For a party?
For a wedding?
For the people you love?
What is the "Commandment?"
3 major sacraments come from the Last Supper!
YouCat Section 99 cont'd:
"When Jesus commanded the Apostles, "Do this in remembrance of me", he made them priests of the New Covenant.
Why are only men priests?
YouCat 92: Jesus had a large circle of disciples around him, both men and women. From this circle he selected twelve men whom he called Apostles. The apostles were specially trained by him and entrusted with various commissions. Jesus took only these twelve apostles with him to the Last Supper, where he gave them the command, "Do this in remembrance of me."
Youcat 99 Cont'd.... "Jesus symbolically anticipated his redeeming Passion by speaking these words over the gifts of bread and wine: "This is my body which is given for you" (Lk 22:19). In this way he instituted the Holy Eucharist."
YouCat 99: Jesus showed his consummate love in three ways: He washed his disciples' feet and showed us that he is among us as one who serves"
Q: Since Jesus is not in the tabernacle, do you genuflect when you walk in?
A: No. Instead, you bow in reverence to the altar, because that is where the bread becomes Jesus' body.
THE SERVICE OF LIGHT
Blessing of the Fire
Preparation of the Candle
The Paschal Candle has a few symbols that are traced on it (the cross, the alpha & omega, the year) and 5 grains of incense embedded in it (the 5 wounds of Christ).
Lighting of the Paschal Candle from the new fire.
The Paschal Candle symbolizes the Light of Christ in the world.
Procession with the Easter (Paschal) Candle
The Priest takes the candle and 3 times lifts it high and sings alone "Christ our light" to which the people respond "Thanks be to God".
All the people light their candles with a flame taken from the Easter Candle
Mass of the Resurrection!!!
Christ is Risen: He is risen indeed!
