Innovation in how we work is as important as technical innovation and VolkerFitzpatrick has adapted the visualisation process used widely in rail industry operations, to meet the unique demands of the construction industry.

Each engineering discipline and key site management areas such as safety and quality has a whiteboard to outline progress, critical concerns and planned activities in a designated room which means that the progress, risks, and issues are readily visible to all the teams. Key members of the project teams, including the client and subcontractors attend regular short meetings where the teams remain standing to review the boards and agree priorities. The process has been so successful that it has been deployed on our rail contracts to manage short possession periods involving the delivery of multidisciplinary works where sharing of information quickly to inform decision making is a critical aspect. This is a very active and dynamic form of working and we are now applying the technique in other sectors.
VolkerRail sets a precedent for managing hazardous waste
Through the use of bioremediation, contaminated soil is excavated and stockpiled before adding a product that digests the diesel contamination, leaving the spoil non-hazardous. VolkerRail have also introduced the use of a Polymer Powder product which minimises the levels of hazardous waste produced after water has been contaminated with oil, as well as minimising the environmental impact on our eco-system.
VolkerHighways leads the way in recycling
Last year VolkerHighways recycled 99% of the 100,000 tonnes of the waste it produced from Highways Maintenance during the year. In the last three months of 2013, 8,000 tonnes came from its in-house recycling aggregate facility. This type 1 material is of the highest quality and produced using the WRAP Quality Protocol.
VolkerStevin reduces safety risks in fast flowing river conditions
As part of the Tay Road Bridge Pier Collision Protection Scheme, sections of pre-cast concrete sector mats weighing 200 tonnes were placed onto the sea bed. This innovative approach was used as the traditional construction method of utilising divers was a safety concern due to the fast flowing nature of the River Tay. The team developed a bespoke lifting frame capable of lifting the 200 tonnes load with the facility to disengage the lifting parts remotely, removing the risk to people whilst being able to work with accuracy.
VolkerLaser uses tablet technology to efficiently insulate thousands of homes
VolkerLaser’s challenge to insulate large numbers of homes using External Wall Insulation has been supported through the development of automated forms used on hand held devices. Using our bespoke technology each surveyor captures information directly on the mobile device, including any photos and these are then collated directly into the database and readily retrieved as work continues.
VolkerInfra brings technology from the wider Dutch group to the UK
The project to design, supply, install, connect and carry out full pre-commission testing of over 6,000 metres of a new 132,000 volt replacement submarine cable under the Solent was a great challenge for VolkerInfra. The new system will connect the EHV (extra high voltage) power cable infrastructure on the mainland to the local grid network for Isle of Wight. With project manager VolkerInfra at the helm, a number of our Dutch sister companies were called in to provide innovation and expertise:

Three areas of the existing wing wall required stablising achieved by using bored piles that were tied back into the existing foundations.

Working with main contractor Amey to bring Queensway and St Chads Tunnels up to date with European safety standards. Extensive work included re-lining, structural strengthening, a new cladding system to improve fire resistance and a new lighting system.

Design and build contract with responsibility for completing all civils works, the construction of a control building and supervising the erection and commissioning of 10, 121m high wind turbines. 48 precast driven piles were installed for each turbine bases to a depth of approximately 16m. Reinforced concrete bases were constructed on top of these piles with each base consisting of 320m3 of concrete and 40t of steel reinforcement.

The project includes excavation works to exposed High Voltage 132kV power cables along the line of the flood defence barrier along with flood water path cut off works.

Involves the regeneration of 1,241 social housing properties using the application of Alsecco external wall insulation. We are working to help improve local unemployment and aim to leave a skills legacy and lasting local jobs in the city. We have recruited locally from skilled and undergraduate pools, whilst working with training providers and employed 15 apprentices to provide them with skills and accredited qualifications.

Design and build project providing a new library facility on UEL's campus in Stratford. The lecture theatre, learning centre, student support centre, seminar rooms, and administrative offices surround a light-filled atrium.

Sustainability was at the core in conceiving this building. The renewable energy strategy includes photo voltaic panels on the roof area and green roof areas encourage biodiversity as well as reducing the amount of rainwater run-off, while rainwater harvesting provides water for wc flushing.

The building is mechanically ventilated and high quality fair faced concrete finishes and exposed concrete ceilings act as thermal mass. Raised flooring provides a plenum for heating and cooling.

The installation of York stone footways and granite set carriageways which was part of a wider scheme to regenerate the area to attract new high-end businesses.

In order to preserve some of the historic features of the area, a delicate restoration and reinstallation of 130 year old listed gas lamps in Eagle Place was completed. This ensured the works remained sensitive to the location, which is a conservation area.

The 120-acre Sketchley Brook development site provides new shops, cafes, industrial units, offices and 345 homes. We delivered the infrastructure for the new development such as roads, drainage, utilities, earthworks plateaus and remediated contaminated ground before the building contractors moved in.

New statutory services and surface and foul water drainage are provided and the project realised the diversion of the existing Sketchley Brook stream which traversed the site.

This three storey, 54,000ft² new build office was built to BREEAM 'Excellent' standard and includes a basement car park.

The building's foundation solution is a 600mm thick waterproof concrete raft slab eliminating the need for piling or tanking. The envelope is mainly Schuco curtain walling with areas of 4mm Ash and Lacy aluminium panels.

The roof is asphalt with a brown roof area with PV and solar panels. The central cores house energy efficient, mono-space Kone lifts as well as toilets and stairs.

Design and build project providing 40,000ft² of high quality office space and three luxury apartments (4,300ft²). It involved demolishing the entire office building behind the facade whilst restoring the façade to its early 20th century condition.

Our site team helped resolve a six year old client planning challenge with their innovative existing floor support system. The project involved 1,600 PV roof slates to English Heritage standards, seven biodiversity roof gardens and two ‘living walls’.

Westminster City Council quoted this project as a model project for central London.

The scheme includes a new 500m flood wall, culvert repairs, installation of non-return valves, demolition of an existing bridge and construction of new road and bridge infrastructure, giving access to the local supermarket.

During the contract period the town experienced several high profile flood events, which resulted in additional emergency works being undertaken by VolkerStevin. Strong ties have developed with local residents and businesses of Todmorden, with our project team being available to help clear areas, build flood doors and provide information and education.
Lower Todmorden and Walsden Water Flood Alleviation Scheme

Redevelopment of the town’s seafront into a well-protected and attractive area for locals and visitors to enjoy in the future. The project brought together coastal defence works to protect the residents and businesses, as well as environmental improvements along the promenade.

700,000 tonnes of sea dredged sand was imported ashore from a licensed dredging ground located 2km north of Colwyn Bay. Approximately 20,000 tonnes of 2-6 tonnes rock armour placed in a four week period, of which 7,800 tonnes was imported in and the remainder was site won from existing groynes.

The project involves the transformation of 98 hectares of heavily polluted industrial land into a place that can be used and enjoyed by people and wildlife for future generations.

The remediation of the land has been completed and c. 250,000m3 of solid waste including asbestos has been processed. An on-site thermal treatment plant was used to treat the most contaminated materials, whilst bioremediation and other mechanical techniques were deployed to treat less contaminated materials.The final phase of works involved landscaping, road infrastructure and road infrastructure and relocation of the River Rother.

On completion the site will incorporate public open space and amenities including football and cricket pitches, a 70 hectare nature reserve with footpaths, wetland habitats and a 28 hectare housing and light industrial development area.

The purpose of the project was to carry out safety modifications and improve the overflow and spillway facilities to allow probable maximum flood flows to be safely routed through the reservoirs and past the embankments.

The project included construction of a new 170m labyrinth weir, tumble bay, bridge and spillway, provision of security CCTV system and access track at Swinden and a new 20m overflow weir, 20m wide baffled spillway, bridge, debris collector and a 10m overflow weir at Lee Green.

Phase two of the Hornchurch Town Enhancement Scheme involved redeveloping the high street and future-proofing the town. It comprised of paving, new footways, carriageways, street lighting, drainage, traffic signals and soft landscaping.

New speed ramps were installed to reduce speed of traffic and to create better traffic flow. Pedestrian crossings installed to benefit the public by giving them safer access to cross.

esign and build contract to rehabilitate the runway. Over 50,000 tonnes of Marshall Asphalt laid to resurface the runway, covering an area of 400,000m². Associated works included renewing 38km of the aeronautical ground lighting duct and pit systems.

Over 1,900 runway and taxiway LED lights were fitted and fed by 530km of new electrical cabling and the drainage system to control discharge flow was upgraded.
