Topic: Violence in Sports Overview
Game between AS Roma and Lazio

Fans broke out into a riot

Hooligans were throwing bottles and firecrackers

"Guys were taking their belts off to use as whips and people were using their shirts to cover their mouth. I don't know whether it was to hide their identity or maybe they were afraid of being gased.." http://www.travelblog.org/Europe/Italy?Lazio?Rome?blog-390086.html
"What we're witnessing has nothing to do with soccer, therefore Italian soccer is stopping."Italian Soccer Federation commissioner Luca Pancalli
http://www.cbc.ca/sports/soccer/story/2007/02/02/italy-soccer-riot.html#ixzz0modsBUF2 European Soccer History
in 2007 a homemade expolosive ws thrown into a 38 year old police officers car, killing him
1996 World Cup, in the Germany vs Yugoslavia a french policeman was beaten to the point of brain damage
in 1964 when a referee disallowed a goal, the crowd broke loose into a stampede, trampling 300 people to death
A riot during a Croatia hosted game in 2001 ended with 130 people injured (including 30 policemen), and 90 people arrested

My Opinion
sports should be fun and competetive, but fans should know when they have gone to far
games should be monitored much more, scanning fans for potential fire weapons, etc.
stricter laws should be emplaced to ensure safety
higher consquences should be laid down to violent fans Questions If you were a dedicated fan how far would you go to defend your team?

How far is too far for the fans?

How should this problem be controlled?

Does it seem neccessary to have high security for just a soccer game? http://myamazingfact.blogspot.com/2009/08/21-soccer-riots.html
