AS YOU WATCH THE VIDEO ON GALAPAGOS REFLECT ON THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:

1. WHY WERE THE GALAPAGOS SO UNIQUE?

2. WHAT WERE SOME OF DARWIN'S MOST IMPORTANT OBSERVATIONS?

3. WHAT ARE SOME VARIATIONS OF SIMILAR SPECIES THAT YOU OBSERVED?
REFLECTION: QUICKWRITE
Essential Question: What did Darwin Observe?
REFLECTION:

Copyright Pearson Prentice Hall
ESSENTIAL QUESTION:
HOW DID DARWIN CHANGE THE WORLD?
EQ: HOW DID DARWIN CHANGE THE WORLD?
Charles Darwin

Scientist who came up with the theory of evolution

Evolution

process of how modern
(newer)
organisms have descended from ancient organisms.
Evolution is a scientific fact.
EQ: HOW DID DARWIN CHANGE THE WORLD?
Voyage of the Beagle

In 1831,
Darwin set sail from England aboard the H.M.S. Beagle for a voyage around the world.

Made 1000s of scientific observations during the 5 year trip

Collected 1000s of plant and animal specimens that he brought home

patterns he saw led to 3 ideas about life on Earth

these patterns led him to the theory of natural selection
EQ: HOW DID DARWIN CHANGE THE WORLD?
Essential Question: What did Darwin Observe?
Species vary around the globe

Different species with similar traits occupy similar habitats all around the world

Essential Question: What did Darwin Observe?
Species vary over time

Fossils of extinct animals were similar to living animals

Essential Question: What did Darwin Observe?
Species vary locally

Different, but related, species occupied different habitats even when they lived close to each other
his
most important

observations
came from the
Galapagos Islands
The Galápagos Islands

ESSENTIAL QUESTION:
WHY WERE THE GALAPAGOS SO UNIQUE?
EQ:WHY WERE THE GALAPAGOS SO UNIQUE?
Galápagos Islands were close together but had very different climates.

Noticed a lot of similar animals had different adaptations to these unique habitats

EQ:WHY WERE THE GALAPAGOS SO UNIQUE?
Galapagos finches

Most famous example of evolution

Discovered atleast 13 different species of the bird among the islands

EVOLVED SEPERATELY TO EAT DIFFERENT FOOD
Concluded all varieties were descended from one common ancestor

AFTER YOU WATCH THE VIDEO ANSWER THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS:
1. WHY DID THESE FINCHES EVOLVE THIS TYPE OF BEAK?

2. How would beak size decrease competition?

3. WHAT HAPPENS TO THEM IF THEIR FOOD DISAPPEARS?
ESSENTIAL QUESTION: WHAT IS NEEDED FOR EVOLUTION TO HAPPEN?
EQ: WHAT IS NEEDED FOR EVOLUTION TO HAPPEN?
Theory of evolution by natural selection
changes in traits allow organisms to survive better in the environment and reproduce successfully.
so parents passed beneficial trait to their offspring

EQ: WHAT IS NEEDED FOR EVOLUTION TO HAPPEN?
Natural Selection

nature selects which traits best "fit" the environment
traits help organism survive
better chance to reproduce
parents best traits passed on
trait becomes common in population
Needs 4 conditions to work

Struggle for existence

EQ: WHAT IS NEEDED FOR EVOLUTION TO HAPPEN?
Organisms produce more offspring than can survive

Results in competition for resources like:
EQ: WHAT IS NEEDED FOR EVOLUTION TO HAPPEN?
Variation
Genes vary within populations/species

lots of different traits
within members of same species
happen from mutation and
new gene combinations
EQ: WHAT IS NEEDED FOR EVOLUTION TO HAPPEN?
Survival of the fittest
Fitness is how well an organism can survive and reproduce in its environment
Some adaptations make organisms fit better in their environment.

EQ: WHAT IS NEEDED FOR EVOLUTION TO HAPPEN?
Adaptations

must help offspring survive and reproduce better
in the environment
a
genetic
trait passed on from a parent to offspring
Reflection:
1. What is the resource(s) these African cats fight over?

2. What adaptations does each have?

3. How does each adaptation help them "fit" in the environment?
