The Future for the International Space Station
The International Space Station has brought countries that once had stressed political relations together to work on a common goal.
United States, Russia, Japan, Canada, Brazil, United Kingdom, German, France, and many more from the European Space Agency all combining together to work on the International Space Station.
The International Space Station, weighing close to a million pounds and taking up the space of an American football field, is the largest vessel in our orbit. Due to the immense size of the International Space Station it is impossible to launch the entire station at once, meaning it had to be launched in pieces called modules and then assembled in orbit. As Michael T. Suffredini, the program manager for the ISS states, "It's like building a ship in the middle of the ocean from the keel up."
The launch that started the International Space Station was November 20, 1998. This launch carried the Zarya Control Module. Through the use of Russian rockets and United State's shuttles, thirty-nine flights have needed to dock with Zarya as it orbited earth about 220 miles up as it traveled at more than 18000 miles per hour to assemble the ISS.
Since October 30, 2000, when the first crew was sent to live in the ISS, the International Space Station has been a home for astronauts in space. However it also has laboratory and observation modules that allow for tests and experiments that could not be done anywhere else. The ISS gives us means to further our knowledge of the realm outside earths atmosphere.
One of the major problems of space travel is the effect of long term exposure to microgravity on the human body, which causes decrease in bone density. Through experiments on the International Space Station however, methods to combat these effects are being tested on the ISS. Not only does the ISS benefit our knowledge of space but also benefits other fields, breakthroughs in the medical field, and observations of the earth that benefit the agricultural field. There are still many mysteries of our universe and the International Space Station sets a foundation for us to reach out and uncover some of those mysteries.
The International Space Station in its current form is only at a fraction of its potential. As of right now the International Space Station is only about halfway through its assembly, with flights planned in the next few years to add more space, energy, and laboratories.

The International Space Station is a magnificent display of human achievement, but does it qualify as a work of genius?
To begin with, what even qualifies something as a work of genius?
I define a work of genius as an innovative benefit for humanity.
