Transcript of The Taming of the Shrew

All of Shakespeare's comedies followed this common elements
a. struggle of young lovers to overcome difficulty that is often presented by elders
b. Love: The theme of love is prevalent in every Shakespeare comedy. Often, we are presented with sets of lovers who, through the course of the play, overcome the obstacles in their relationship and unite.
c. Separation and unification
d. Mistaken identities
e. One or more clever servants
f. Heightened tensions, often among family
g. Multiple, intertwining plot
h. Frequent use of puns, many of which today’s audience do not understand

Shakespeare's Comedies
Induction
Story begins In the English countryside, a poor tinker named
Christopher Sly
becomes the target of a prank by a
local lord
. Finding Sly drunk out of his wits in front of an alehouse, the lord has his men take Sly to his manor, dress him in his finery, and treat him as a lord. When Sly recovers, the men tell him that he is a lord and that he only believes himself to be a tinker because he has been insane for the past several years. A troupe of actors presents a play for him. The play that Sly watches makes up the main story of The Taming of the Shrew.
Setting
Induction: The English countryside outside an alehouse and at the Lord’s home
Scenes I - V: Padua, Italy – 1593 –1594. Time span is about one week to ten days

Tone · The overall tone of the play is light and comic, though the exploration of larger social questions, such as the proper relation of the sexes in marriage, lends much of the comedy a more serious tone.

Action Comedy
Physical Appearance Comedy
Verbal Humor Comedy: can often use puns (play on words)

Induction
The structure of the play is unique, as it is the only
work by Shakespeare that is a play within a play.
The induction serves as a framework for the play,
however the characters in the play are abandoned
after Act I Scene I.
Plot
The play opens as the student
lucentio
arrives in Padua. He hears that the merchant
Baptista
has two daughters, but the younger daughter,
Bianca
, cannot be married before her sister,
Katherina
.

On seeing Bianca Lucentio falls in love with her and changes identities with his servant
Tronio
. Bianca already has two suitors but does not like either. The first, an elderly
Gremio
, hires Lucentio disguised as a Latin tutor to woo Bianca on his behalf while Hortensio, her other suitor, disguises himself as a musician to get access to her.

Meanwhile
Petruchio
, a young adventurer form Verona arrives with his servant
Grumio
, to visit his friend Hortensio. He learns about Katherina and decides to woo her, aided by both Gremio and Hortensio.
