Shakepspeare William Shakespeare was born in 1564 and grew up in Stratford-upon-Avon, located in England. Shakespeare was and is one of the greatest writers of all time. Shakespeare created nearly 2000 words and gave the English language phrases and sayings that we still use today. Between 1590 and 1613 he wrote 38 plays,1545 sonnets and alot of short poems Plot of Romeo and Juliet Two Families of Verona, Capulet's and Montague's feuding against each other. Balthasar Gnomeo and Juliet Gnomeo and Juliet is more of a kid friendly movie but is meant to have the same romance in it. This film still represents William shakespeare as he is supposedly in the film and as it is about two Gnomes (that are from different gardens and their families are old enemies) that fall in love which of cause is forbidden. There are no deaths in this film, it's more comedic than tragic and still has the diaogue of the orignal but insead of making it the exact same thing they have creatively twisted it into something humerous. Baz Luhrman's version Baz Luhrman's version of Romeo and Juliet, has the same concept of the actual play but is summarized and modernized. The film as it is summarized does not have all the dialogue of the play as it would have been too long and has a bit of a twist. Instead of having it set in the 1500's, having olden time dressing, swords and horses, they switched it to this century which means modern dressing (open tops and shorts.) guns instead of swords and cars instead of horses. Characters List Franco Zeffirelli's Version Franco Zeffirelli's version stuck to the traditional play which means it was set in the Shakespearean time ( 1500's) same exact dialogue ( word for word) and same concept. Instead of meeting at a 'Party' like Baz Luhrman's version they meet at a traditional ' Feast' where they also share their first kiss. This film has traditional costumes, speech and setting which are castles. This film is fairly long as no scenes have been cut out everything is 'Traditional' 'Shakespeare in Love' This film was based on When Shakespeare wrote the most Greatest love story of all time. In this film Young Shakespeare is struggling to write a play for a theatre and is desperate to find his muse, then he meets a woman named Viola de lesseps, who is in love with the theatre and wants to be an actress but as a woman she cannot perform on stage as it is forbidden, so in love with the theatre she dresses as a man and names herself Thomas Kent. She falls in love with Shakespeare and after realising that Thomas is a woman he falls for her too. He was married and she was promised to someone else. The play Romeo and Juliet was based on this film as Shakespeare played Romeo and Viola played Juliet. Viola and Shakespeare had to part ways and from then on he wrote plays with his muse on his mind, Viola Comparison Activity Romeo and Juliet is a classic tale written by William Shakespeare in late 1500s and has been retold many times. The main plot is that two lovers from opposite families are doomed as the families are old enemies and are feuding, in the end both of lovers die because of a misunderstanding. The four movies that we have studied portray Romeo and Juliet in their own creative way.
Baz Luhrman version of the film Romeo and Juliet has the same concept of the play but has been summarised and modernised. There are scenes that have been cut out and there are things in the film that would have not existed back in the late 1500s . It still portrays William Shakespeare as they still use his language. They use cars and guns in this film and they have cut out certain scenes in this film as it would’ve been too long
Franco Zeffirelli version of Romeo and Juliet was one of the first films ( out of the remakes before this one) in colour, made in the 1968. This version uses the exact dialogue of the actual play hence why it is long, and was actually set in Shakespearian times. This film may not appeal to teenagers as it is long and it is not modernized like Baz Luhrmans version.
Shakespeare in Love is supposed to be when Shakespeare first wrote Romeo and Juliet as he finds his muse Named Viola (who he has an affair with). Some people think that this was based on a true story as Shakespeare and Viola were themselves forbidden to love each other. This film would be more targeted to a mature audience as there is a love scene and may bore younger viewers. the costumes are also set in 1500's
Gnomeo and Juliet
is a humerous parody of Romeo and Juliet, the concept of this film is he same only there is no tragedy, the Gnomes do not wear shakespearean clothes for they are ceramic and cannot change their original clothes . the dialogue has been twisted into a humorous way they may not bee the exact words but they still have the same concept. This movie is aimed at kids and older.
All four of these films have represented William Shakespeare's play Romeo and Juliet, each in a different way and at leasthave the concept of Romeo and Juliet within all 4 of the films.
