A Whole New Mind By Daniel Pink Abundance Asia automation Six senses design story symphony empathy play meaning We are moving from an economy and a society built on the logical, linear computer-like capabilities of the Information Age to an economy and a society built on the
inventive, empathic, big-picture capabilities
of what’s rising in its place... the Conceptual Age! So what does that mean for us, the students? In order to survive in this age we have to learn to adapt! ... BUT HOW?! "knowledge worker" well-educated manipulator of information and deployer of expertise THE BRAIN Misconceptions R-Directed Thinking = Necessary for success High Concept ability to empathize with others understand the subtleties of human interaction to find joy in one's self and to elicit it in others to stretch beyond the quotidian in pursuit of purpose and meaning to detect patterns and opportunities to craft a satisfying narrative to combine seemingly unrelated ideas into something new to create artistic and emotional beauty involves invovles the capacity . Today, the defining skills of the previous era — the “left brain” capabilities that powered the Information Age — are necessary but no longer sufficient. And the capabilities we once disdained or thought frivolous — the “right brain” qualities of inventiveness, empathy, joyfulness and meaning — increasingly will determine who flourishes and who flounders. For individuals, families and organizations, professional success and personal fulfillment now require a whole new mind. -controls left side of the body -controls right side of the body -simultaneous (the picture) -sequential (the thousand words) High Touch - specializes in text -specializes in context Left vs Right -analyzes the detail -synthesizes the big picture the right brain is NOT a savior the right brian is not a saboteur risks sabotaging the economic and social progress we've made by applying the force of logic to our lives "people who get paid for putting to work what one learns in school rather than for their physical strength or manual skill" -outsourcing! -One out of ten jobs in the U.s. computer, software, and information echnology industry will move overseas in the next two years. One if four it jobs will be offshored by 2010 Man vs Machine -boosting the significance of beauty and emotion and accelerating individuals' search for meaning create something that is also beautiful, whimsical, or emotionally engaging Facts(extremely available + instantly accessible) = less valuable
what matters more is the ability to place these
facts in context and to deliever them with emotional impact! synthesis- seeing the big picture
-putting the pieces together to forge relationships and to care for others Laugh! Lightheartedness games humor More Significant Desires: purpose, transcendence, and spiritual fulfillment
