Finding Equivalent Fractions by Multiplying by 1 You have learned that when a number is multiplied by 1, the value of the number does not change We can use this property to find equivalent fractions Four times what number equals eight? Equivalent fractions are different names for the SAME number Example # 1 What name for 1 should 3/4 be multiplied by to make 6/8? Example # 2 Write a fraction equal to 2/3 that has a denominator of 12. Example # 3 Write a fraction equal to 1/3 that has a denominator of 12. Then write a fracting equal to 1/4 that has a denominator or 12. What is the sum of the two fractions you made? Try these examples: Find the fraction name for 1 used to make each equivalent fraction:
