Transcript of Exothermic and Endothermic Reactions!!!

Chemical Reactions!!! Endothermic Reactions Exothermic Reactions What is a chemical reaction? A chemical reaction happens when...
Two things react and form new products There are many different kinds of chemical reactions!
Some give off energy
Some absorb energy Examples??? Thermic = heat An exothermic reaction releases energy Reactants Products + Energy Talk with your table and try to think of an example of an exothermic reaction An Endothermic reaction takes in energy!

In other words...an endothermic reaction
REQUIRES energy to occur. Talk with your table and try to think of an example of an endothermic reaction Reactants + Energy Products Exo= going out Thermic=heat Endo=going in Thermic= heat! Mr. Zbin and Ms. Lima *write this in your worksheet *Write these in your worksheet :) Since an exothermic reaction releases energy (heat), what happens to the temperature of the outside environment? *talk to your table The temperature of the environment around the reaction INCREASES!

...because energy (heat) is being released into the environment! * Write this in your worksheet * Write this in your worksheet * Write in worksheet What do you think happens to the temperature of the environment outside of the endothermic reaction???
does it INCREASE, DECREASE, or stay the SAME?
*hint* think about where energy (heat) is moving THe temperature of the environment DECREASES!!!

...because energy is taken out of the environment and used to cause the reaction! Separate into EXO and ENDO groups and get ready to become exothermic and endothermic reactions!!! What happened??? What happened to the energy in the exothermic group?
What happened to the energy in the endothermic group?
With your table, talk about how energy changes the outside temperature. Be prepared to share. Mystery Lab!!! You are given one bag of epson salt and one of laundry detergent, it is your job to figure out which one will cause an endothermic reaction and which one will cause an exothermic reaction! First: make predictions on your worksheet!
Second: put a little water in your bag and wait for the reaction!
Third: explain where the energy went.
Fourth: tell us which chemical causes which reaction. Elephant Toothpaste!!! * You will be able to explain how this happens by the end of class! Thank You!!! Endothermic or Exothermic??? It is exothermic!!!
Heat is released and causes the soap to foam up! Review!
Exothermic reactions release heat!
Endothermic reaction absorb heat! Energy is the same as light and heat! * Write this in your worksheet * Write this in your worksheet Will it INCREASE,DECREASE, or stay the SAME?
