If you are concerned that any report you make of suspected abuse or unsure practice is not acted upon, report it to you manager

Then your manager is responsible for taking the matter forward and you should ensure that they report back to you within an agree timescale

If you are concerned that management is involved in abuse or unsafe practice, you will need to whistle blow to external organisations.
Reporting or disclosing abusive or negligent behaviour in the interest of the people you work with is described as 'whistle blowing'

The Public Interest Disclosure Act 1998 protects workers who 'blow the whistle' from victimisation by their manager or employer, providing they follow the correct procedure

5.1 Describe unsafe practices that may affect the well-being of individuals
Unsafe, abusive work practice that can affect an individual's well - being include:

Rough handling, for example pushing, pulling dragging
Misuse of medication, for example hiding medication in food or giving medication to control
Ignoring health needs, such as pressure ulcers and social needs such as clean clothing and personal hygiene
5.2 Explain the actions to take if unsafe practices have been identified
Health and social care providers are obliged to ensure that their staff use safe practice and help them improve their performance.

They must also have systems in place to enable staff to report inadequate resources or operational difficulties that could affect the delivery of safe care.

What should you do if you identify unsafe work practice?

Keeping the environment too hot, too cold, drafty, stuffy
Not providing food and drink when requested
Not taking someone to the toilet when they need to go,leaving them in soiled, wet clothing or bedding
Inappropriate restraint, such as tying down to a bed, chair or toilet
Making people do things they do not want to do, for example eat or go to bed when they are not ready
Controlling people, making decision for them, not allowing them to do as they wish
Abandoning people and isolating them
Belittling people
Using crude or sexually explicit language
Discuss your concerns with the person concerned
Be discrete and sensitive
They may be unaware that their work is unsafe
Try not to point this out in public could be embarrassing and humiliating
Follow you setting's policies and procedure for reporting unsafe practice
You have to discuss concerns with your manager
Recording your concerns on a specific form
You are protected as a whistle blower if you
are a worker
believe that malpractice is happening at work, has happened in the past or will happen in the future
disclose information of the right type
disclose to the right person and in the right way
