(This is only 2 minutes of the 16 minute speech, but it is the most quoted section of the entire speech.)
It's traditional to buy your loved ones Chocolates
My dad would buy chocolate for my mom, my brother, and me (we always shared with him)
Groundhog Day (the movie)
Bill Murray stars as the main character who must relive Groundhog Day over and over again until he does the day correctly
What is a Groundhog?
Groundhogs are also known as Woodchucks
They're really big
rodents (啮齿类动物)
, like mice or squirrels
We have a
tongue twister (绕口令)
about them, too:
How much wood would a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
A woodchuck would chuck all the wood he could if a woodchuck could chuck wood!
Punxsutawney Phil
Punxsutawney Phil lives in Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania
He is the famous Groundhog of Groundhog Day
It's mostly an old farmer's
superstition (迷信)
that isn't taken seriously any more
If he sees his shadow, 6 more weeks of Winter
If he doesn't see his shadow, Spring comes early
It's a Party!
It's very common to have a New Year's Eve Party at your house for family and friends!
Some people would rather go to a public party (like this one in NYC) than have a house party!
Many people put on their own personal fireworks
(Which is VERY dangerous!)
Some go to public shows
(Which are a LOT safer!)
A toast to the New Year!
Champagne is usually saved for special occasions and holidays as a way to celebrate.
Some people prefer to simply toast whatever they happen to be drinking that night.
New Year's Kiss
It's tradition to kiss someone (hopefully who you know!) at the stroke of midnight!
Rose Parade
Not as big as the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade
In Pasadena, California
Happens as part of the Rose Bowl Celebration
Rose Parade
First game of American Football of the year
First played in 1902, it's the oldest Bowl
College, not professional, teams play
Most people don't complete their lists
Some people don't make them at all!
Civil Rights Movement
Although slavery was
abolished (ended legally)
in 1865, many places still kept African-Americans and white Americans
segregated (apart)
This meant separate schools, churches, offices, bathrooms, drinking fountains, neighborhoods, train cars, everything
The white versions were always better and African-Americans were poorly treated
Civil Rights Movement
This is
Malcom X
, another famous leader of the Civil Rights Movement
Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK Jr.) preferred peaceful protests while Malcom X encouraged reacting to violence with violence (but he did not want people to simply be violent for the sake of protest)
Both of them were assassinated
I Have a Dream
Martin Luther King Jr.'s most famous speech,
I Have a Dream
, was part of a huge rally in Washington, DC
He presented it on the steps of the Lincoln Memorial on
August 8, 1963 (1963年8月8日)
Abraham Lincoln was the 16th president and he began the movement for the freedom of slaves in the US
Date Night!
It's very common for couples to get each other Valentine's-related gifts
They also tend to go out to eat at nice restaurants and dress nicely
Happy Birthday, Mr. President
Feb 22, 1732
Feb 12, 1809
Thomas Jefferson
Teddy Roosevelt
Abraham Lincoln
George Washington
First President
Wrote the Declaration of Independence
Very popular president
Began the movement to abolish slavery
Saint Patrick
It's a Party!
Drink like the Irish!
And so even though we face the difficulties of today and tomorrow,
I still have a dream
. It is a dream deeply rooted in the American dream.

I have a dream
that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal."

I have a dream
that one day on the red hills of Georgia, the sons of former slaves and the sons of former slave owners will be able to sit down together at the table of brotherhood.

I have a dream
that one day even the state of Mississippi, a state sweltering with the heat of injustice, sweltering with the heat of oppression, will be transformed into an oasis of freedom and justice.

I have a dream
that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character.

I have a dream today!
Kids in primary school will buy boxes of pre-made Valentines to bring in to class
Everyone in the class gets one and many of them have
puns (双关语)
Not Irish, from England
Is credited with "Casting the snakes out of Ireland"
Is also credited with bringing Catholicism to Ireland
A lot of people use St. Paddy's Day as an excuse to "Drink like the Irish"
(Basically, they drink a lot!)
Guinness is genuine Irish beer, so it's a very popular choice
In Ireland, Guinness makes a big deal out of St. Paddy's Day!
Some people like to play pranks on their coworkers such as:
putting their mouse and keyboard in Jell-O
gift wrapping everything on their desk (and sometimes the furniture, too!)
putting cling film (plastic wrap) around everything
putting sticky notes on their car/desk
Some websites will release "features" that are also pranks
Google is known to have good ones every year!
Although it celebrates all Presidents, President's Day is between the birthdays of George Washington and Abraham Lincoln
Many parents hide Easter Eggs for their kids throughout the house or yard
Some bring them to big Egg Hunts like this one
We had a family friend who made the best Egg Hunt in his backyard!
People who are very religious will get an ash cross on their foreheads as a symbol that Lent has started
Lent is where people give something up for 40 days as a sacrifice for Jesus Christ
Tuesday in the 7th week before Easter, day before Lent
People eat all the things they might be giving up
Mardi Gras is a huge party in New Orleans
The first Earth Day was a teach-in in 1970
The 1970s were known to be more earth-friendly than the generations before
I Have a Dream
Shrove/Fat Tuesday / Mardi Gras
Ash Wednesday
Egg Hunts
Now, 192 countries celebrate Earth Day
It's become a tradition to plant trees
Many companies will also make advertisements about
"Going Green"
Anna Jarvis first celebrated Mother's Day in 1908 to honor her mother
Some families do breakfast in bed for their moms
My family gets our mom a gift and my dad makes breakfast for the whole family
American Civil War (1861-1865)
Memorial Day is the day to remember those who died serving our country
The first Memorial Day took place after the Civil War
Memorial Day is also considered the "First Day of Summer"
Many people (including my family) celebrate with a Barbecue (BBQ)!
Gifts for Dad!
Many families will get their dad's gift related to barbecues or tools
We got my dad a new grill one year!
The Declaration of Independence
Independence Day (also called Fourth of July) celebrates the signing of the
Declaration of Independence (独立宣言)
It's basically a whiny letter the colonies (not yet the US) wrote to the King of England saying "We're not a part of you any more!"
Before this, the US was still under British rule
When I think about American summertime, the movie Sandlot is always what I imagine: kids playing baseball and getting into trouble
Labor Day
First Monday in September
American Labor Movement
Americans fought for better pay and work conditions
Worker's Unions (工人工会)
were popular because they were fighting for the worker, not the company
Americans love barbecues!
Plus, Labor Day is considered the "End of Summer" and people like to celebrate summer with a barbecue!
Columbus first arrived in America in 1492
At least 7 other groups of people had already been to America
Plus, the Native Americans had been there since around 10,000BC
That's 11,492 years before Columbus!
He also enslaved a lot of people and purposefully made them very sick to make it easier to take over
Christopher Columbus
Native American Day!
Many places celebrate Native American Day instead of Columbus Day
Native Americans do not have a holiday of their own
Also, Columbus was a jerk to them
Danny's First Halloween!
College Parties
Halloween Movies
Rocky Horror Picture Show
Around this time of year, many churches will have pumpkin patches
Americans love
pumpkins (南瓜)
We have a lot of pumpkin-flavored things (that are very sweet!)
I have a
recipe (食谱)
for great pumpkin-chocolate chip cookies!
Kids dress up in costumes and go door-to-door asking for candy
If you go to certain fast food places in costume, they might give you something for free
There are also a lot of events for children at malls and shops
College students use Halloween as an excuse to dress up in very little clothing
They like to have huge parties and drink a lot
A lot of people watch scary movies on Halloween
I prefer to watch the kid's Halloween movies
This movie is called Halloweentown and it's the best kid's Halloween movie
Rocky Horror Picture Show is an experience
It's a
cult (崇拜)
classic and the fans are very into Rocky Horror
There is usually a shadow cast of people who act out the movie in front of it
People also dress up and there are certain things to shout at the movie
Rocky Horror Picture Show Shadow Cast
All clocks are changed to be 1 hour ahead
All clocks are changed to be 1 hour behind
Federal Office
House of Representatives and Senate
Armistice (停战)
Elections (选举)
for Federal Office positions (President, Vice President, Congress) happen every 4 years
The last election happened in 2012, the next will be 2016
Elections (选举)
for Representative positions (House of Representatives and Senate) happen every 2 years
Not everyone in the House or Senate is up for re-election every 2 years
They change it every time to give the politicians more time in office
World War II (二次世界大战 or WWII)
ended November 11, 1918 (11/11/18) at 11:00
It was called Armistice because that is the time the nations put down their arms (weapons)
Like Memorial Day, Veterans Day honors people who were once soldiers
Memorial Day remembers those who died while Veterans Day honors those who retired

Family Traditions
Good Morning!
Family Traditions
Family Trips
My parents host a "Pre-Thanksgiving" with the neighbors
(We love Thanksgiving so much, we have it twice!)
Every year, we drive to visit my mom's cousin and her family
They're the only family we have within driving distance (2 hour drive)
But they moved away! (a 12 hour drive)
My family spent 1 Thanksgiving without them and they said it was the worst ever!
One year, I was in Ireland for Thanksgiving
So I made a Thanksgiving dinner with my friends!
My family Skyped with me on the TV at Pre-Thanksgiving
I also Skyped them at our cousin's house on Thanksgiving
I even Skyped my gramma in Minnesota on Thanksgiving!
My mom sent my roommates and I candy and gifts from the US for Christmas!
Since my mom's family lives in Minnesota and my dad's family lives in Colorado, we often flew to visit our family on Christmas
This picture is from 2008, we were going to visit my grandparents on my dad's side (my grandpa was very sick)
Every year, my brother and I get to open 1 gift on Christmas Eve
When we visited my dad's family, we would eat tamales for Christmas Eve Supper
When we visited my mom's family, we would eat potato soup for Christmas Eve Supper
My brother and I would go to bed early so Santa would come
Santa Clause
Santa travels around the world bringing gifts to kids who have been good throughout the year and coal to those who weren't good
My brother and I have been to old to believe in Santa for a long time, but we still ask him for a gift
We pick 1 gift we really want that's a little bit more expensive than the others and ask Santa for it
Christmas always seems to be over too quickly and our gifts are opened very fast
We get to spend the rest of the day playing with our new toys!
Every year on Christmas Day, my family goes to see a movie
If we are visiting my mom's family, we make gingerbread cookies (and a lot of other cookies!)
If we are visiting my dad's family, we have potato or cheddar soup for Christmas Supper
It's traditional in the US to have a Christmas Ham for dinner, but my family prefers soup!
In 2012, we didn't go to visit any family
Instead, we went to the Biltmore House (the largest single-family home in the US!)
Most of it is a museum now and they decorate it beautifully for Christmas!
