Transcript of Symbolism

A
symbol
is an object, action, or idea
that represents something other than itself
, often of a more abstract nature. Symbolism creates quality aspects that make literature like poetry and novels more meaningful.

Investigating symbolism
Symbolism is not a new thing!
It's been around a long time...
Symbolism has survived through the ages!
Is Rihanna disturbed?
Pull your (deducing) finger out!
Your task is now to examine symbolism in a
poem by Carol Ann Duffy.

The symbols she uses evoke strong images/feelings
in the mind of the reader.

In this poem, she writes from the perspective of a famous Dickens' character, Miss Havisham, who was jilted on her wedding day and becomes a frail victim.

Firstly
,
think about the title.
The title is "
Havisham
" - now what do
you think about that?
Why is her dress so voluminous?
The size of a dress was seen as
a measure of wealth or power;
the choice of fabric also played a part in showing status.
Pearls are signs of innocence and purity - she was known as 'the Virgin Queen'.
The ears and eyes tell us that she saw and heard everything - they are a warning to her enemies!
The serpent is a sign of wisdom!
The heart shaped ruby hanging
from its mouth suggests that she
never let her heart rule her head.
What is Beyonce trying to show us
with the symbols in this video?

Think about:-
1) The soft, white light that surrounded
her,
2) Her make-up was very natural,
3) She was dressed in white.
4) The song is called 'Halo' .
Rihanna uses dark colours to show her disturbed mood.
The clothes she wears are very suggestive and feature a lot of black and grey hues.
She wears strange contact lenses, along with an unusual wig, to portray that something isn't right!
Her make-up is very overstated on purpose and gives off a crazed look.
Beloved sweetheart bastard. Not a day since then
I haven’t wished him dead. Prayed for it
so hard I’ve dark green pebbles for eyes,
ropes on the back of my hands I could strangle with.

Spinster. I stink and remember. Whole days
in bed cawing Nooooo at the wall; the dress
yellowing, trembling if I open the wardrobe;
the slewed mirror, full-length, her, myself, who did this

to me? Puce curses that are sounds not words.
Some nights better, the lost body over me,
my fluent tongue in its mouth in its ear
then down till I suddenly bite awake. Love’s

hate behind a white veil; a red balloon bursting
in my face. Bang. I stabbed at a wedding cake.
Give me a male corpse for a long slow honeymoon.
Don’t think it’s only the heart that b-b-b-breaks.
.
Each group will examine the language to deduce what symbolism is present and what it means.
Half of you will pick out symbols from Eclipse and the other half of you will pick out symbols from Antonia's story.

You are then going to share your ideas with the class about each of these symbols by playing pictionary!

E.g.
A dog COULD symbolise loyalty; or it MIGHT be a derogatory symbol for being a tame pet.
