Humanitarian Efforts In 1985 comedy writers Lenny Henry and Richard Curtis came up with the idea to combine comedy with charity. These two writers founded Comic Relief, which is a charity that was first started to raise money to help famine in Ethiopia but today it is involved with many other charities and helps with problems all over the world, even in Britain. During Comic Relief, which is in March, Celebrities put on, often satirical or roast like, performances that are broadcast on television on BBC 1 and 2. Millions of people from all over the country watch it and donate money. In 1988 they started Red Nose Day. On this day people buy and wear red noses to donate and show their support for Comic Relief. The first Red Nose Day raised 15 million pounds and since then Comic Relief has raised over 800 million pounds, that's 1,277,920,00 American dollars. Red Nose Day is held on odd years because on even years Sport Relief is held; on Sport Relief people can choose to walk 1, 3, or 6 miles for charity. Artistic Achievements The country I think is in a golden age at the moment is the United Kingdom. Even though what is considered to be their actual golden age ended in the 1920's, I think Britain is making a comeback. The United Kingdom Medical and Technological
Contributions In 1990 Sir Tim Berners-Lee invented the World Wide Web. Which isn't exactly the internet but it is the reason we have websites. He is a British computer scientist and he was a major part in producing the 2012 London Olympic opening and closing ceremonies. British scientists have also contributed to health like the discovery of stem cells and DNA. James Watson and Francis Clark discovered the double helix structure of the deoxyribonucleic acid or DNA in 1953. Also during his early research at Cambridge University Martin Evans discovered embryonic stem cells. These cells are so early in development tat they have the potential to grow into other cells that make up the human body. They have the potential to cure cancer and many other diseases. Economics Politics The United Kingdom is a unitary state under a constitutional monarchy. Queen Elizabeth II is the head of state of the UK. Te UK has an uncodified constitution. Because there is no technical difference between ordinary status and a constitutional law, the UK parliament can perform a constitutional reform by passing Acts of Parliament and abolish almost any written or unwritten element of the constitution. No Parliament can pass laws that no future parliament can change.
I think the UK is in a golden age because, like the Islamic golden age, they're spreading their culture and developing it so that they can adapt to the diverse population and tourists. And because I think the country is growing with the world as well as influencing the rest of the world to grow with them. 1.04H The Golden Age of Islam The main reason I think the United Kingdom is going through a golden age right now is its recent success in the arts. The most famous author in the world, J.K. Rowling, is Scottish and some of the biggest names in fashion, music, and television are british. The highest paid actor on TV, until recently, was Hugh Laurie, and some of the most famous fashion designers in the world are Dame Vivienne Westwood and Alexander McQueen. But most of the country's recent success has been in music. Adele, One Direction, Jessie J, and Coldplay are just a few of the UK's biggest names in music. All of these people ,no matter what art form, have all been spreading the British culture around the world. Which in my opinion is what has started not only a British Invasion in America but worldwide. The United Kingdom has the 7th largest economy in the world and the second largest in the European Union. It's diverse, developed, and market-based economy allows the residents to have a higher standard of living. Even though Britain has a large economy it entered recession in 2008, but it soon exited in the final quarter of 2009. Tourism is a huge part of the British economy, London gets the most international tourists in the entire world. London is one of the financial centers of the world, alongside New York and Tokyo. London is a global leader in emissions trading and is a center for Islamic banking. London is also home to the Alternative Banking Market. http://www.impalapublications.com/blog/index.php?/archives/4793-limportant-recent-British-scientific-discoveries,-by-James-OFee.html
