The Legend of King Arthur Did Arthur really exist? Arthur's name was first mentioned in a 7th century Welsh poem. The legends probably came from the struggles of a 6th century Celtic chieftain fighting off invading Saxons. One of the most popular literary versions is Sir Thomas Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur. Many movies and novels have been based around the legend of King Arthur. Principal Characters
