Students may have up to 500 words in their receptive vocabulary but they are not yet speaking. {Additional 6 months}
Students will develop a receptive & active vocabulary of about 1000 words. Stage 3: Speech Emergence {Additional 1 year}
Students have developed a vocabulary of about 3,000 words &
can communicate with simple phrases and sentences. Stage 4: Intermediate Fluency {Additional 1 Year}
Students have a vocabulary of 6000 active words. Stage 5: Advanced Fluency Repeat
Duplicate gestures & movements
Listen attentively
Copy from the board Answer with yes or no
Speak in 1-2+ word phrases
Use repetitive language patterns
Begin to verbalize while still internalizing English Will ask simple questions
Able to do some content work with support
Will imitate short conversations with classmates

Use on the playground, at lunch, on the bus, at parties, playing sports, talking on the phone {Develops within 6 months - 2 years after arrival in U.S.} When Teachers/Administrators think a child is proficient in the language when they demonstrate good social English. Formal academic language (listening, speaking, reading, writing)
Essential for students to achieve in school
