Departments and Jobs in the Games industry
By the end of the session
Identify the departments and job roles in the games industry.

Describe different job roles in the industry.

Create 2 job advertisements for a job of your choice.

Skill Development

Present information in a logical sequence through completion of the task.

What games inspire you and make you want to be a part of the industry?
Game Departments
The game industry and it's companies can be split across 7 different departments;
Design
Artist
Production
Programming
Marketing
Distribution
Legal

Before we go further, can you work out what jobs would be associated with with the different types of companies?
Production
The production phase is the making of the game and a number of different job roles are involved in the production of any game.
QA Tester
Audio Engineer
Creating the soundtrack for a game, including music, sound effects, character voices, spoken instructions and ambient effects. (creativeskillset.org)
Sound is an important aspect of the games production from the original 8bit sound of the first games like PONG to the suspense of Alien:Isolation audio engineers play a huge part in the immersion of a game.
Testing, tuning and debugging a game and suggesting refinements that ensure its quality and playability
Assuring quality in a game and finding all its flaws before it goes public
QA testers are an integral part of the production process, ensuring games are not released with flaws and problems. It's a dream job for many but working hard is always the key.
Task
Using creativeskillset.org (games, job roles, create a flow diagram highlighting a specific department and 2 job roles involved in that department).
Include what is involved in that department.
Brief description of the roles you have chosen.
Examples from the industry.
Think of the dream job you chose at the start of the lesson.

Create a job advertisement for that dream job. Looking at the following things:
Description
Salary
Qualifications needed
Experience needed.
Department
Responsibilities
Use the creativeskillset.org website to help you and any links it gives you to help you.
From the research you conducted into departments, chose another job you think would be interesting and create another job advert for the role.
