What is a Pyramid?
The definition of the word pyramid is “a monumental structure with a square
base and sloping sides that meet in a point at the top”. The Egyptians built pyramids almost 5000 years ago. The pyramids were built as permanent tombs for pharaohs: to bring them to the afterlife. Egyptians believed that pyramids could take a pharaoh’s soul to the sky. A large pyramid could take more than 20 years to complete, the pyramid of Giza took about 20 years to build with about 10,000-20,000 at a time.
Different Types of Pyramids
There are about 80 pyramids in Egypt, which are still standing. The pyramids were designed to protect the body of the pharaoh and the stuff he was taking with him to the next world. The Egyptians prepared pyramids very carefully. Even the heavy blocks were laid in layers, one layer at a time.

The Step Pyramid
One of the first pyramids is a step pyramid
Only one step pyramid still exists
Step Pyramids were built as symbolic staircases to heaven, so the pharaoh could reach the stars
The Bent Pyramid

The Straight –Sided Pyramid is symbolic to the ramp of sunbeams, so pharaoh could walk to join the sun god
There are 3 pyramids in the bunch
One of the seven wonders of the ancient world
The three pyramids are built by Pharaoh Khufu, his son Khafre and his grandson, Menkaure
Khufu’s pyramid is the largest, it is 482 feet tall and it’s built with about 2,300,000 blocks
Before the Eiffel Tower that was built in 1887, the pyramid that was built for Pharaoh Khufu was the tallest building in the world
Khafre’s pyramid is the next largest pyramid that was built 70 years later and it is ten feet shorter, but now it looks taller because it was built on higher ground
Menkaure’s pyramid is the last one in the bunch and it is the smallest; it is only 217 feet tall
The statue of the Sphinx stands outside the pyramid of Khafre, it is an important symbol and was formed to be the sun god. It has the face of a pharaoh and the body of a lion. It has been there for 4,500 years.

Had lots tricks and twists to protect the pyramid
The tomb of the Pharaoh was buried 80 feet underground
It was surrounded by a wall nearly mile long
