Coal Advantages & Disadvantages
Impact On The Environment
United States of America (USA)
Coal is cheaper to buy.
It is used for producing iron and steel.
It is found in many more places than other fossil fuels.
It reduces the dependence on using oil.
Thanks for watching
& I hope
you enjoyed the show !!!
It takes thousands of years for coal to form which is a long time.
It is a non-renewable resource.
It cannot be recycled.
Impact On The Environment
Pros & Cons of Coal
US Natural Resources
Every year, one coal plant produces 170 pounds of mercury and 1/70 of teaspoon of mercury kills the fishes in a lake.
One coal plant creates 10,000 tons of sulfur dioxide, which causes acid rain and this damages forests, lakes and buildings.
Coal slurry (a mix of rock and left over coal) is a semi-liquid and is stored in a pond/small lake near the mine exit. The slurry contains chemicals which are categorized as low-level toxic waste.
When coal has been burnt dust, gas and chemicals are released into the air.
Location of US & Coal
Coal is found in:
West Virginia and other places

Countries beside United States of America:
Mexico, Bahamas, Canada and Belize
Population: 316.85 million people
Coal was discovered by French explores in 1679.
Each year, United States burns more than a billon tons of coal.
Every year, 38,000 heart attacks, 12,000 hospital admissions and addtional asthma attacks result from coal plant pollution.
In West Virginia, 126,00 miners (who produced 168 millions of coal) were employeed in 1948 and in 2005, 110,000 miners were reduced (because they died).
Coal mining in West Virginia began in the 1740s.

1.03 Canadian dollar
A coal plant creates 720 tons of carbon monoxide which causes headaches, lung diseases and stress on people.
Mercury intereferes with the developemnet of the babies when babies consume a fish (the fish consumes mercury and dies).
Consuming mercury leads to learning disablities and attention deficit disorder (the child will not pay attention).
One of the gases, it gives off is carbon monoxide which is highly poisonous and even 1 % of it can cause death.

Formation of Coal
When huge plants died, they formed layers at the bottom of the swamps.
Water and dirt began to pile up on top of the dead plants.
Rock and dirt created pressure & heat and built up on top of the dead plants (remains), and turned into coal.

Coal Company: BHP Billton
How much does BHPB extract from the Earth:
Every year, BHPB extracts 104 million tons of coal from the Earth.
Based on the average electricity usage, every day each person in U.S.A consumes about 20 pounds of coal.
In 2006, BHPB made a profit of US $10 billion for digging up 1 million tons of coal.
U.S.A sells coal for $100 per ton to countries such as China.
