“I personally witnessed two fellow students murder twelve of my classmates and one teacher. The assault weapons ban which then in effect did not deter these two murderers, nor did the other thirty-something laws that they broke.” Evan also asked, “Why would you prefer criminals to have the ability to out-gun law-abiding citizens?” He then asked the president: “Whose side are you on?”
Evan M. Todd
Global Issue Overview
People: The issue divides people strongly and often in politics, and understanding both sides is important to understand the issue of gun laws in society. Many politicians include their gun control views to appeal to a select group of voters.
Pocketbooks: Guns are used about 2.5 million times per year to prevent crime. The amount of savings in personal losses, police work, and court and prison expenses drastically outweighs the cost of criminal gun violence and gun accidents. A worst-case scenario estimate, is about $3.5 billion a year.
Planet: There is now news that the Second Amendment is under attack from the United Nations (UN). The UN says that their gun arms trade treaty will go into effect on Christmas Eve, which is causing many pro-gun rights advocates to be worried.
People: “In order to win back the districts, Democrats need to win, they need to pick up a lot of pro-gun districts,” said Democratic strategist Steve Murphy. This quote exemplifies gun control laws play a huge role in politics and people in general as it is seen as a huge issue.
Pocketbooks:The Law Enforcement Officers Safety Act (LEOSA) is a law, enacted in 2004, that allows police officers, retired and active, to carry a concealed firearm in any jurisdiction in the United States, regardless of state or local laws, with certain exceptions. This law is a great example of how lives are so easily saved. The more lives that are saved the amount of money saved increases.
Planet: Recently many conflicts of interests have arised including gun law issues such as the Brown Vs. Ferguson case. The U.N. has begin to evaluate the issue more in depth due to social media amplifying the issue.
Around the world gun control laws are often debated when crime arises in the news. The topics they discuss revolve around crime rates increasing or decreasing due to stricter gun laws.
A solution needs to be achieved, relatively soon due to the violent outbreaks and controversy on social media, the U.N. needs to be involved so that the solution is not only achieved in the U.S., but globally. It can be achieved by everyone voting on their position.
Effects On People
Everyone will benefit from this solution because it will increase peace and decrease crime rates because people won't be fighting over if it should be a law anymore, the decision will already be made.
Effects On The Planet
It may cause uproar and rebellion in some areas of the world that are against gun laws however the majority or the world would benefit because it would ensure safety in most places.
Effects on Pocketbooks
The government will benefit from this with a profit around $3.5 billion a year because less money will be used on police work, personal losses, and court and jail expenses.
Overall gun control laws are a very debated and controversial topic. There are many positives to them such as peace levels, profit increasing, and crime rates decreasing. There are also many negatives such as certain areas of the world rebelling and violent protests breaking out. However if the peace levels increase in essence some of the negatives may be reduced and maybe even eliminated.
