INTRODUCTION
This study focuses on organizational and political leadership in a third world country: Pakistan
It explores the transformational leadership of Benazir Bhutto, the youngest Prime Minister of Pakistan and first woman to lead an Islamic country
Bhutto was not only a figurehead for change, but an inspiration to all through her bravery and passion in advocating her causes, for which she was assassinated for in 2007
CONCLUSION
Bhutto was nominated for the Social Change Agent award because she had:
strong moral codes
powerful leadership qualities
the ability to inspire her followers to champion her causes
Limitations of study:
Consulted secondary resources only
Application of transformational leadership qualities and practices was based solely on theoretical research
Transformational leadership theories focused on the business context
First accused of corruption by President & the military in 1990, sparked by her retiring a prominent army general
Bhutto & her husband were accused of paying “commissions” to foreign companies & being involved in other suspicious dealings
Bhutto’s brother was killed, with Bhutto’s mother accusing Bhutto & her husband of organizing the shooting on political grounds

Bhutto was notoriously involved in Pakistan’s nuclear program, where under her govt Pakistan produced kilograms of nuclear grade plutonium
A Pakistani nuclear weapons specialist alleged Bhutto ordered him to give her information on uranium enrichment technology, which she passed onto North Korea

An effective social change agent understands the complex in which they operate.
People from different cultures view power differently.
Some leadership styles, such as transformational leadership, are seen to be universal.
Bhutto was able to harness universally accepted leadership traits, in order to generate social change.
Ethics
An authentic transformational leader acts on moral principles (Bass & Riggio 2012).
Ethical leadership is crucial in earning and protecting public trust and stakeholder’s expectations (Delaney 2003).
There are moral elements in each component of transformational leadership.
ETHICS
Bhutto demonstrated virtue ethics throughout her political career.
She heavily promoted an agenda for women’s rights – supporting women’s education and creating a special women’s police force address domestic violence.
She took a stance against the Hudood Ordinances on moral grounds – despite their popularity in Pakistani society.
