Mama I'm Coming Home
By: Ozzy Osbourne
Times have changed and times are strange
Here I come, but I ain't the same
Mama, I'm coming home
Times gone by seems to be
You could have been a better friend to me
Mama, I'm coming home

You took me in and you drove me out
Yeah, you had me hypnotized
Lost and found and turned around
By the fire in your eyes

You made me cry, you told me lies
But, I can't stand to say goodbye
Mama, I'm coming home
I could be right, I could be wrong
It hurts so bad, it's been so long
Mama, I'm coming home

Selfish love yeah we're both alone
The ride before the fall yeah
But I'm gonna take this heart of stone
I just got to have it all

I've seen your face a hundred times
Everyday we've been apart
I don't care about the sunshine, yeah

'Cause mama, mama, I'm coming home
I'm coming home

You took me in and you drove me out
Yeah, you had me hypnotized
Lost and found and turned around
By the fire in your eyes

I've seen your face a thousand times
Every day we've been apart
And I don't care about the sunshine, yeah

'Cause mama, mama, I'm coming home
I'm coming home
I'm coming home
I'm coming home
Quote:
“That night I lay in bed and thought about dying and going to be with my mother in paradise. I would meet her saying, “Mother, forgive. Please forgive,” and she would kiss my skin till it grew chapped and tell me I was not to blame. She would tell me this for the first ten thousand years” (Kidd 3).
Writing:
Many of the lyrics in this song describe how Lily feels about her mother throughout the story. “Selfish love yeah we're both alone” comes to mind, as Lily thinks that she is alone where she is in life (before realizing that she has the sisters there for her) and she thinks of her mom as someone who was taken from her, and how her mom is in paradise without her. This song also represents the motif of motherlessness throughout the story. Lily constantly imagines what life would have been like if her mother was a part of it.
Kids (Instrumental)
By: Michael Stein and Kyle Dixon
Quote:
“I crept down the stairs, through the kitchen. When the night hit my face, I felt like laughing. The moon was a perfect circle, so full of light that all the edges of things had an amber cast. The cicadas rose up, and I ran with bare feet across the grass” (Kidd 22).
Writing:
The Kids song, at least in the case of Stranger Things, is used to portray mystery, travel, and mainly it shows the kids (or in SLoBs case, Lily) discovering something for themselves. Lily discovers that she no longer deserves to be treated so harshly by T. Ray, and decides to run away. Or at least she decides to run off at night.
Run Run Run
By: The Who
Quote:
“Sunset is the saddest light there is. We rode a long time in the glow of it, everything silent except for the crickets and the frogs who were were revving up for twilight. I stared through the windshield as the burned lights took over the sky” (Kidd 50).
Writing:
In this part of the story, Rosaleen and Lily are running away from home to the place on the back of Lily’s black Mary picture. Rosaleen is running with Lily to protect her, as well as to get away from T. Ray and his abusive tendencies. Lily is running away because T. Ray has been abusing her her entire life, and she figured out that he had been lying to her about her mother this entire time.
Run, run, run
Run, run, run
Run, run, run
Run, run, run
Well baby, better take my advice
A black cat crossed your path twice
The moon came out next to the 1
Then you opened your umbrella in a room
You better run, run, run
Run, run, run
Run, run, run
Run, run, run
Well you ain't the luckiest girl I know
And you won't get luckier the way you're going
Your horseshoe's rusty and your mirror's cracked
You walk under ladders then you walk right back
You better run, run, run
Run, run, run
Run, run, run
Run, run, run
When you dropped that little pin
Never thought what a mess it'd get you in
Little pin, little pin, bring me luck
Because I stopped to pick you up
You better run, run, run
Run, run, run
Run, run, run
Run, run, run
Well now, little girl, I'm helping you
I hope you believe what I say is true
Whenever you run, I'll be running too
Whenever you run, I'll be following you
You better run, run, run
Run, run, run
Run, run, run
Run, run, run
Run, run, run
Our Window
By: Noah and the Whale
Quote:
“Our mother loved spring and summer,” May said. “We had an April, too, but… she died when she was little.” May’s grin dissolved, and out of nowhere she started humming “Oh! Susanna” like her life depended on it. Rosaleen and I stared at her as her humming turned into hard crying” (Kidd 73).
Writing:
This song would play during the part in the story in which Lily and Rosaleen meet the Calendar Sisters (or right before). The song has multiple symbolic meanings in the story too. Obviously, the song (and album) is about spring which is what 2 of the sisters are named after, as well as in the song it says “Spring can be the cruelest of months”, which could describe how the sisters feel about their sisters passing, as it was cruel to seperate the sisters.
Just a Kiss
By: Lady Antebellum
Quote:
“I was conscious of Zach’s breathing, his shirt pulled across his chest, one arm draped on the steering wheel. The hard, dark look of it. The mystery of his skin. It was foolish to think some things were beyond happening, even being attracted to Negroes. Id honestly thought such a thing couldn't happen” (Kidd 125).
Writing:
This song would take place during the scene were Zach and Lily almost kiss but Zach goes back to work and she wishes he kissed her. The entire romance between Zach and Lily is viewed as ‘forbidden’, because interracial relationships were not accepted back then. Lily never knew she could love a black man, but she slowly grows upon the idea.
Lyin' here with you so close to me
It's hard to fight these feelings
When it feels so hard to breathe
Caught up in this moment
Caught up in your smile

I've never opened up to anyone
So hard to hold back
When I'm holding you in my arms
We don't need to rush this
Let's just take it slow

Just a kiss on your lips in the moonlight
Just a touch of the fire burning so bright
And I don't want to mess this thing up
I don't want to push too far
Just a shot in the dark that you just might
Be the one I've been waiting for my whole life
So baby I'm alright, with just a kiss goodnight

I know that if we give this a little time
It'll only bring us closer
To the love we wanna find
It's never felt so real
No it's never felt so right

Just a kiss on your lips in the moonlight
Just a touch of the fire burning so bright
And I don't want to mess this thing up
I don't want to push too far
Just a shot in the dark that you just might
Be the one I've been waiting for my whole life
So baby I'm alright, with just a kiss goodnight

No I don't want to say goodnight
I know it's time to leave,
But you'll be in my dreams

Tonight
Tonight
Tonight

Just a kiss on your lips in the moonlight
Just a touch of the fire burning so bright
No I don't want to mess this thing up
I don't want to push too far
Just a shot in the dark that you just might
Be the one I've been waiting for my whole life
So baby I'm alright, oh, let's do this right

With just a kiss goodnight
With a kiss goodnight
Kiss goodnight
Well it's four in the morning,
Things are getting heavy,
And we both know that it's over, but we both are not ready
And you're talking like a stranger
So I don't know what to do
And I'm callous and I'm cruel, to everyone but you

And the stars shining through our window
And the stars shining through our window
And it's been awhile since I stared at the stars
Yeah, it's been awhile, since I stared at the stars

Spring can be the cruelest of months
But bringing in your life
Yeah we're promising so much
Like the pledge that you gave when you said that you'd always love me
But we both know by autumn you're like the color of leaves

And the stars shining through our window
And the stars shining through our window
And it's been awhile since I stared at the stars
Yeah it's been awhile since I stared at the stars

Well I don't think that it's the end
But I know we can't keep going
Well I don't think that it's the end
But I know we can't keep going

'Cause blue skies are coming but I know that it's hard
Don't You (Forget About Me)
By: Simple Minds
Quote:
“That night, in my bed, when I closed my eyes, bee hum ran through my body. Ran through the whole earth. It was the oldest sound there was. Souls flying away” (Kidd 213).
Writing:
This song could be played after May’s funeral, when the Calendar sisters and Lily are reflecting upon May’s life and her death. It sort of resembles how her legacy will live on, and how the sisters and Lily will always consider her their sister (or one of her mom's in Lily’s case)
Hey, hey, hey ,hey
Oh

Won't you come see about me?
I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby

Tell me your troubles and doubts
Giving me everything inside and out and
Love's strange so real in the dark
Think of the tender things that we were working on

Slow change may pull us apart
When the light gets into your heart, baby

Don't you forget about me
Don't don't don't don't
Don't you forget about me

Will you stand above me?
Look my way, never love me
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down

Will you recognize me?
Call my name or walk on by
Rain keeps falling, rain keeps falling
Down, down, down, down

Hey, hey, hey, hey
Oh

I Want To Know What Love Is
By: Foreigner
Quote:
Writing:
“He bent his face close to mine and kissed me. At first it was like moth wings brushing my lips, then his mouth opening on mine. I gave away against him. He kissed me gently, but at the same time hungrily, and I liked how he tasted, the scent of his skin, the way his lips opened and closed, opened and closed. I was floating on a river of light. Escorted by fish. Jeweled by fish” (Kidd 230).
This song would play when Zach and Lily kiss for the first time in chapter 11. This part of the story shows how much passion and love Zach and Lily have for each other, and that no matter what, Zach will find a way to be with Lily, and find a way to love her.
I gotta take a little time
A little time to think things over
I better read between the lines
In case I need it when I'm older

Now this mountain I must climb
Feels like a world upon my shoulders
I through the clouds I see love shine
It keeps me warm as life grows colder

In my life there's been heartache and pain
I don't know if I can face it again
Can't stop now, I've traveled so far
To change this lonely life

I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
I wanna feel what love is
I know you can show me

I'm gonna take a little time
A little time to look around me
I've got nowhere left to hide
It looks like love has finally found me

In my life there's been heartache and pain
I don't know if I can face it again
I can't stop now, I've traveled so far
To change this lonely life

I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
I wanna feel what love is
I know you can show me

I wanna know what love is
I want you to show me
And I wanna feel, I want to feel what love is
And I know, I know you can show me

Let's talk about love
I wanna know what love is, the love that you feel inside
I want you to show me, and I'm feeling so much love
I wanna feel what love is, no, you just cannot hide
I know you can show me, yeah

I wanna know what love is, let's talk about love
I want you to show me, I wanna feel it too
I wanna feel what love is, I want to feel it too
And I know and I know, I know you can show me
Show me love is real, yeah
I wanna know what love is
Don't you try to pretend
It's my feeling we'll win in the end
I won't harm you or touch your defenses
Vanity and security

Don't you forget about me
I'll be alone, dancing you know it baby
Going to take you apart
I'll put us back together at heart, baby

Don't you forget about me
Don't don't don't don't
Don't you forget about me

As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
As you walk on by
Will you call my name?
When you walk away

Or will you walk away?
Will you walk on by?
Come on, call my name
Will you all my name?

I say,
La la la
The Wailing Wall
By: Todd Rundgren
Quote:
“August and June pulled May to her feet.
“I’m going to the wall,” May said.
June shook her head. “It’s getting dark.”
“Just for a little while,” May said.” (Kidd 187).
Writing:
The Wailing Wall has an important place in the Secret Life of Bees, as it's where May goes when her thoughts get dark. She uses it as a way to cope with sadness, and this song (being about The Wailing Wall) describes that with lyrics like “Kneeling down for sadness sake. Crying just as though my heart would break.” Although, in this section of the book, she uses the Wall as an excuse to get out of the house and end her life.
There's a grand old maid across the sea
So the story was recalled to me
And from dawn 'til dark, you hear her call
Down in front of the Wailing Wall
And she cries all day, so sad and alone
'Til someone comes along and leads her home

Nobody listens, and nobody seems to care
But everyday, you'll find them there and
Kneeling down for sadness sake
Crying just as though their hearts would break
And from dawn 'til dark, you hear them call
Down in front of the Wailing Wall
And they cry all day, so sad and alone
'Til someone comes along and leads them home

You know I don't listen, and you know that I don't care
But everyday you'll find me there and
Kneeling down for sadness sake
Crying just as though my heart would break
And from dawn 'til dark, you'll hear me call
Down in front of the Wailing Wall

Lean On Me
By: Bill Withers
Quote:
Writing:
This song would play during the last scene of the movie/book, where Lily is reflecting upon what has happened in her life, and how she has more mothers than she ever had (those being Rosaleen and the Calendar sisters).
“I got back to that burned afternoon in August when T. Ray left. I go back to that one moment when I stood in the driveway with small rocks and clumps of dirt around my feet and looked back at the porch. And there they were. All those mothers. I have more mothers than any eight girls off the street. They are the moons shining over me” (Kidd 302).
Sometimes in our lives
We all have pain, we all have sorrow.
But if we are wise,
We know that there's always tomorrow.

Lean on me when you're not strong
I'll be your friend, I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on.

Please swallow your pride
If I have things you need to borrow
For no one can fill those of your needs
That you won't let show.

You just call on me, brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on.
I just might have a problem that you'll understand,
We all need somebody to lean on.

Lean on me when you're not strong
And I'll be your friend I'll help you carry on
For it won't be long
'Til I'm gonna need somebody to lean on

You just call on me, brother, when you need a hand
We all need somebody to lean on.
I just might have a problem that you'll understand,
We all need somebody to lean on.

If there is a load
You have to bear
That you can't carry
I'm right up the road
I'll share your load
If you just call me.

Call me if you need a friend
Call me, call me, uh-huh
Call me when you need a friend
Call me if you ever need a friend
Call me, call me (x4)

Call me if you need a friend
Call me, call me (x4)

Call me

Titanium
Quote:
“I read the letter back, then tore it into tiny pieces. I felt relief to get all that out of my system, but I had lied about it bringing me joy” (Kidd 163).
Writing:
This song is about being strong, and not giving up when overcoming any obstacle in your way. In Secret Life of Bees, Lily has to overcome a ton of obstacles. T. Ray has hid stuff from her, abused her, and hurt her throughout the entire story. In this section of the story, Lily proves her independence by sending T. Ray a letter, telling him how terrible he is and how bad of a father he has been. Although she didn’t send the letter, writing it allowed her to get out her anger.
You shout it out,
But I can't hear a word you say
I'm talking loud, not saying much
I'm criticized but all your bullets ricochet
Shoot me down, but I get up

I'm bulletproof, nothing to lose
Fire away, fire away
Ricochet, you take your aim
Fire away, fire away
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium

Cut me down
But it's you who'll have further to fall
Ghost town and haunted love
Raise your voice, sticks and stones may break my bones
I'm talking loud not saying much

I'm bulletproof, nothing to lose
Fire away, fire away
Ricochet, you take your aim
Fire away, fire away
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium
I am titanium
I am titanium

Stone-heart, machine gun
Firing at the ones who run
Stone heart loves bulletproof glass

You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium
You shoot me down but I won't fall
I am titanium
