Animals in Space
Transcript of Animals in Space
Many people believe that Laika was the first dog in space, but she wasn't. She was actually the 10th dog in space. In Russian, her name meant Husky or Barker. But her real name was Kudryavka, meaning Little Curly. She wasn't trained very well before being put in a metal carrier under the second
on 3rd November, 1957. There was no time to workout a re-entry
. Sadly, Laika died just a few hours after reaching space. In April 1958, the Sputnik 2 burned up in the outer
Fruit flies were the first animals in space. They were sent by America in a captured German V-2 rocket on February the 20th 1947. The rocket boosted the Blossom capsule to an altitude of 106
on a brief suborbital flight and survived.
Soviet R-1 Series
Between 1951 and 1952, Soviet R-1 series rockets carried 9 dogs (3 dogs flew twice). Each flight carried a pair of dogs in a complete and
, sealed containers that were recovered by
when they came back down to Earth.
Because they were early
hounds, only a few were remembered by name.
America and Russia have both sent animals into space. They usually sent monkeys, chimpanzees, cats and dogs.
These are real dogs, from the the Soviet R-1 series, fully equiped in their suits.
It must have been pretty "ruff"!
Thank you for watching!
It is not always well remembered that chimpanzees paved the way to the the first humans in space. Even less remembered, that chimpanzees died for America. Chimpanzees may have filled in the missing link for the
of human spaceflight. If chimpanzees didn't go in to space, humans would not have made the journey into space. If chimpanzees hadn't gone into space, humans wouldn't have made the trip.
This is Ham.
He was the first chimp in space.
