A process of finding the total of two or more numbers. The total is called the sum.

The numbering system we use today is called the Hindu-Arabic system. This numbering system consist of the following ten digits:

The digit 7 is in the ten thousands place. Therefore, the value of digit 7 is 70 000.
The number 1 372 859 is read as 'one million three hundred and seventy-two thousand eight hundred and fifty-nine'
Rounding off
Question: Round off 758 216 to the nearest Thousand.
Solution : 1) Underline the number that shows thousand and circle the number
on the right.

Example -
758 216
Place value is thousand.
2) If the circled number is greater than 5, add 1 to the lined number and replace all the digits to the right of the lined number with zeros. If the circled number is less than 5, don't add any number. Just retain the number and replace all the digits to the right of lined number with zeros.

3) Tips : If the digit to the right of the one to be rounded off is
(i) Less than 5, then retain the digit to be rounded off and replace all the
digits to its right with zeros.
(ii) 5 or greater than 5, then add 1 to be rounded off and replace all the
digts to its right with zeros.
Example: Find the sum of 735 and 96.

Therefore, 735 + 96 = 831
Read as 'seven hundred and thirty-fiveplus ninety-six equals eight hundred and thirty-one'. Plus means add.

Find the total number of visitors.

Use addition.
Add the umber of tickets sold.
Carry out the plan

Subtaction is a process of finding the diffrence between two numbers.

Kassim has RM 52 128 in Bank Simpanan Nasional. He withdraws RM 25 000 to donate to a charity. How much balance does Kassim have in the bank?

Understand the problem.
Total saving = RM 52 128
Amount withdrawn = RM 25 000
Find the balance in the bank.
Devise a plan
Use subtraction.
Subtract the amount withdrawn from the total savings.
Carry out on a plan
RM 52 128 - RM 25 000 = RM 27 128

Understand the problem
Number of books sold in one day = 85
Sales period = 2 weeks
Find the total number of books sold.
Devise a plan
Convert two weeks to days.
Use multiplication.
Carry out the plan
85 x 14 = 1 190
Therefore, the bookshop sells 1 190 books in two weeks.
1 week = 7 days
2 weeks = (7 x 2) days

Use a calculator to check
Six mangosteen are shared equally between Rosman and Omar. Both of them will get 3 mangosteen each.
