Who is Lana Del Rey?
Elizabeth Woolbridge Grant also known as Lana Del Rey is a singer, songwriter, musician, fashion model and rapper. She was born on June 21st, 1986 in New York City. Lana sings alternative, chamber pop, hip hop and indie pop. She has created three albums; Lana Del Rey a.k.a. Lizzy Grant, Born to Die and Paradise. Born to Die sold over 3.4 million copies worldwide in 2012, making it the fifth best-selling album of 2012.
In 2011, Lana won the Q award for "Best New Thing", a GQ award for "Woman of the Year" and a BRIT award for "International Breakthrough Act". At the UK Music Video Awards, her song "Born to Die" won "Best Pop Video - International". During the MTV Europe Music Awards, she won "Best Alternative". In 2012, she recieved another BRIT award for "International Pop Female Solo Artist", an ECHO award for "Best International Newcomer" and "Best International Female Pop/Rock Artist".
As a child, Lana began singing in church choirs. Her uncle taught her how to play guitar. At the age of 18, she began to perform in clubs and bars around the city under names such as Sparkle Jump Rope Queen, Lizzy Grant and the Phenomena. In Brooklyn, she got signed by an indie label at nineteen. When Lana was twenty, she signed a record contract for $10,000.
The Great Gatsby
The Great Gatsby is an upcoming 2013 film. Together with the film's director, co-writer and co-producer Baz Luhrmann, Lana's song "Young and Beautiful" is featured for the the soundtrack of The Great Gatsby. The song is being used as the film's kickoff single. A part of the song appeared in the trailer and is played when Leonardo DiCaprio and Carey Mulligan express their feelings for one another. Hip hop magazine Rap-Up called the song "haunting" and MTV called it "somber-sounding". On April 22nd, an official audio for "Young and Beautiful" came out.
