8.10B: The student is expected to identify how global patterns of atmospheric movement influence local weather using weather maps that show high and low pressures and fronts.
Students will be able to recognize and recall the weather map symbols.
Level of Bloom's Taxonomy
Symbol is a Blue Capital "H"
When atmospheric pressure is greater than the surrounding area.
Clear skies and calm weather
Symbol is a red capital "L"
Atmospheric pressure is lower than the surrounding area.
Produce cloud, precipitation and other bad weather such as tropical storms and cyclones
Red Circles and Blue Triangles
When a cold front and a warm front stop moving; pushing against each other
clear, partly cloudy, light precipitation
Cold air pushing into warmer air
Gusty, temperatures drop, heavy rain,
Warm air pushing into colder air
Warm temperatures, Rain is likely,
Purple triangles and semicircles
Cold air meets cool air in front of warm front.
Precipitation, wind changes direction and temperatures change.
Sky is clearer and air is drier
