JOHN GREEN
THE FAULT IN OUR STARS
Summary
Hazel Grace Lancaster
Character Trait: Depressed
Augustus Waters
Character Trait: Confident
Peter Van Houten
Character Trait: Rude
Theme
Conflict

Hazel is depressed because since she has cancer, she can't do things like normal teenage girls. So instead she stays home watching Americas Next Top Model, re-reading the book An Imperial Affliction, and thinking about death.
Peter is rude because when Augustus and Hazel came to his house, he made fun of their cancer and cut them off when they tried talking to him.
"He seemed so intelligent in print" Van Houten said to Lidewij regarding Augustus "Perhaps the cancer has established its way into his brain."
The theme of this story is that
sometimes in life you may not always
get what you want and what you wish for, therefore you have to be thankful for what you have while you have it, because you never know what tomorrow will bring.
Person vs. Person
Hazel and Van Houten have an
argument where they disagree
about whether an author has
an obligation to imagine a life for his fictional characters outside of a
book.
"That novel was composed of scratches
on a page. The characters inhabiting
it have no life beyond those scratches.
They all ceased to exist the moment the
novel ended." "No" I said "I understand
that but it's impossible not to imagine a
future for them."
Setting

The Fault in Our Stars mostly takes
place in Indianapolis, where Hazel, Augustus, Isaac and their
families live.
Setting
It also takes place in Amsterdam,
where Peter Van Houten
and Lidewij live.
Summary
Augustus is confident because he asks Hazel to come to his house even though he knows that she will say no because they just met.
"You should see it" He said "V for Vendetta I mean" "Okay" I said "I'll look it up" "No. Now. With me. At my house" He said.

"I rarely left the house, spent quite a lot of time in bed, read the same book over and over, and devoted
quite a bit of my free
time thinking about
death."

Hazel knows that she will never
be cancer-free and that
eventually she will die. Unfortunately,
that makes her push people
like Augustus away,
because she doesn't want
to hurt them.
"Gus I'm a grenade. And at some point,I'm going to blow up and I
would like to minimize the
casualties okay?"

The sixteen year-old Hazel Grace Lancaster has lung cancer and needs to carry an oxygen tank
everywhere she goes. Her mom Frannie decides that Hazel is depressed and makes her go to a
support group. At the Support Group, Hazel meets seventeen year-old Augustus Waters who used
to have Osteosarcoma Cancer and made him lose his left leg. They get to know each other better,
and fall in love. Hazel shows Augustus her favorite book, “An Imperial Affliction”
and she tells him that she always dreamed of having a conversation with the author,
Peter Van Houten, who lives in Amsterdam. After Augustus contacts the author’s
assistant Lidewij, Van Houten invites Hazel and Gus to Amsterdam. Gus surprises Hazel
by asking the Genies from Make-A-Wish Foundation if he can use his cancer wish to go
to Amsterdam with Hazel, because she used her wish to go to Disneyland when she was
thirteen.
Their trip was successful until they got to Peter Van Houten’s house. He started making fun of their
cancer and not answering any of their questions by cutting them off when they tried talking to him.
They got really upset and left. On their last day, Hazel, Augustus and Frannie went out for breakfast.
After breakfast, Frannie went back to the hotel. Augustus and Hazel walked and stopped at a sidewalk
bench. He explained to Hazel how the cancer came back into his body and that he
was going to die soon. When they went back to Indianapolis, Hazel, Gus and their best
friend Isaac had a "Pre-funeral" for Gus. Eight days later, Hazel's family got a call that
Augustus died in the ICU. At his real funeral, Peter Van Houten showed up and gave a
letter to Hazel from Augustus. It was a eulogy he had written for her, and wanted Van
Houten to proofread. At the end of the book Augustus' eulogy said, "You don't get to
choose if you get hurt in this world, but you do have some say in who hurts you. I like
my choices. I hope she likes hers." Hazel replies, "I do, Augustus, I do."
Connection
Text to Text
There is a novel by Nicholas Sparks called A Walk to Remember
that is similar to The Fault in our Stars. In A Walk to
Remember, Jamie had Leukemia and she had a wish list to
do before she dies. Because Landon loves her, he makes all
her wishes come true just like how in The Fault in our Stars,
Augustus takes Hazel to Amsterdam and makes her wish
of meeting Peter Van Houten come true.

There was a thirteen year-old girl named Talia
Castellano who had both Leukemia and Neuroblastoma. Just like Augustus, she was
always positive and didn't let cancer bring
her down. She was a Youtube star and even
a Covergirl.
Thanks For Listening!!
I can relate Cody to Hazel because
they both had cancer and they also
both fought hard through it.
