Ophelia's Character Development Ophelia loves Hamlet Ophelia and Hamlet are madly in love and as most young lovers they did not let anyone get in the way of the spark they possessed. Polonius and Laertes tell her to distance herself Polonius and Laertes doubt Hamlet's love for her, they think that Hamlet believes she will be too big of a distraction to focus on Denmark's best interest so they tell her she needs to end it with him or she will just get hurt. Theme: The loss of a loved one can drive you mad, but more than one can end bad. Ophelia Dies After Hamlet leaves and Polonius dies Ophelia had fallen to her death. It is a question of whether is was suicide or accident. “He hath, my lord, of late made many tenders of his affections to me” (Act 1 S3 lines 104-105) “But, good my brother, do not, as some ungracious pastors do, show me the steep and thorny way to heaven” (Act 1 S3 lines 49-51) “Ophelia do not believe his vows; for they are not brokers, not of that dye which their investments show” (Act 1 Scene 3 lines 131-133) “I shall obey my lord” (Act 1 Scene 3 lines 141) Ophelia Goes Mad Before Hamlet leaves for England he tells Ophelia that he never really loved her. Ophelia took this very harshly, and she starts to move on when her father Polonius dies. "get the to a nunnery."
