Transcript of GeoEconomics-Pollution of the sea

Threat on people and animals because of litter
People: -people who walk barefoot -> cut
because of plastic objects etc. -> sick
-chemicals can find their way into our body
-animals in the sea eat our waste
-we eat fish which ate waste before
-we have waste in our stomaches
-litter at the beaches: result of human activities
-most happen far away from the ocean
-litter goes into sewers, storm drains and waterways -> into the oceans
-big problems: industries, petroleum, fertiliser, waste water, waste, increase of temperature, mass tourism
-80% of litter: from land
-20% of litter: from ships
-wind takes plastic with him
-sometimes it lands in the sea
-people who throw plastic into a or near a river
-stream takes the plastic into the sea
-little plastic particulates are lying under the sand -> with the flood they get into the sea
-people leave plastic on the beach -> wind
takes it into the sea

The pollution
of the sea

by Leandra, Johanna, Marina and Ana
The extent of litter
-people call it 'the eighth continent'
-as large as Central Europe
-maybe twice as large
-the continent consists solely of waste
-is growing every day
-all regions of the world are effected, even the Arctic
-14 billion pounds of garbage since 1975
-more than 1.5 million pounds every hour
Where do million tonnes of litter
come from?
Animals: -die in tins or are caught in fishing nets
-die distressful
-cullets and corks hurt paws
-eat the waste -> starve or drown
-oil: can't swim because of oil in the
-seals: get tangled up in fishnets ->
blanket or die

Why does plastic go into the sea?

5. What can people do against it?
Litter in the sea
What can you do against the
pollution of the sea?
-never put chemicals and oil on the ground!
-don't leave trash on the streets!
-Avoid waste!
What should people do against the pollution
of the sea?
-don't do enough
-pollution of the sea: global problem -> global activity
-all people have to produce less waste
-not impossible to clean the oceans
-have to combat root causes
-industry: find a more natural way of producing
-reduce packaging, especially industrialized
Plastic in the sea
Extent of plastic
-very high
-worldwide: more than 100 million tonnes of plastic
-each year: 6.4 million tonnes of plastic
-gets more and more: everything is wrapped with plastic
-every square kilometre: thousands of pieces of plastic
-all region of the world are effected, even the Arctic
-thin plastic bag takes 10-20 years until it's gone
-plastic bottle: takes over to 450 years

Where do these tonnes of plastic
come from?
-mankind is responsible
-if we put plastic into the toilet -> directly into the ocean
-we leave plastic bags on the street -> rain carries it to street drains -> canalisation -> into the ocean
-from ships
Threat on people and animals because of plastic
Animals: -plastic becomes in the event of death
for animals
-tortoise confounds plastic bags with
-fish confound little pieces of plastic with
-sea gulls think plastic pellets are the eggs
of fish
People: -we eat fish - the fish ate plastic before ->
we have plastic in our stomaches
-we are reliant on this plastic
-some people depollute plastic waste
in nature

-cannot do anything against plastic which is already in the ocean
-can prevent that it doesn't get more
-try to use less plastic: buy juices in glass bottles, vegetables which are not wrapped with plastic, yoghurt in glass cups
-use drapery bags, no plastic bags
-to avoid more plastic bags: people have to pay for them
-good example: Ireland
-if all countries would do that ->
less plastic
What can people do against plastic in the ocean?
If all people would try to produce less trash, the sea would be cleaner and it would be very good for the environment!
