Body type can be regarded as Somatotype

Somatotype has three extreme classifications

Endomorph
Mesomorph
Ectomorph

Needs to be heavy, so he is hard to push and lift.
Needs strength and power to push his opponent.

Somatotype is important, it may mean that you are better suited to one sport more than another.

WHAT IS THE IDEAL BUILD FOR A SPORT
Look at the picture can you say why the athlete needs to be heavy for his sport?
EXTENSION: Can you say how POWER will benefit this athlete?
What is their ideal somatotype and why?
EXTENSION: Can you say why swimmers need to be strong?

Tall and light is an advantage. because they have less weight to carry around the course therefore using less energy, being tall gives them an increased stride length.
Not suited to power and strength sports
Can succeed at endurance events

What body type would you associate with this athlete? Why is being tall and light is an advantage for a marathon runner?
EXTENSION: What sports is this body type not suited for and why?
Rugby is a sport that all somatotypes can play successfully

Endomorph - pack
Mesomorph - forward
Endomorph - scrum half

What other sports do you think this applies too?

Can you think of a sport where all three body types would be suited for successful performance?
Success in Sport depends largely upon body type

This is a factor that an individual has very little control over

Your basic physique is something you are born with

TASK - Think of 2 sports we haven't mentioned or looked at today and
state which somatotype is best suited to that sport.

Identify the key characteristics that affect / influence performance in that sport.

EXTENSION- Explain how these factors can influence performance.
