Transcript of Darwin Socialism

Social Darwinists argue that the government should NOT help the population by regulating economy or investing to help in social causes such as poverty. Darwinists believe that everyone is in a constant drive for survival and no government should interfere with the competition.

Who is Charles Darwin?
Charles Darwin was an English naturalist and geologist best known for his contributions to evolutionary theory.
Darwin's Contribution
Wrote ground breaking books such as
"The Origin of Species" (in 1859),
The Descent of Man" (in 1871).
Darwin only talked about natural selection in context to nature, NOT society.
However, his theories influenced political, social and economic policies.especially in the Democratic Republic of Congo, prevalent in the
Heart of Darkness.
Social Darwinism
During the early to mid 1800's most naturalists believed all species either came into being at the start of the world, or were created over the course of natural history.
Charles Darwin's theory of evolution(yes the one we all had to study tirelessly) defied the natural belief of his era. Therefore, in his era no one seemed to believe him.
Darwin got bullied tremendously by journalists
It was only until the next century that scientists found DNA evidence correlating to his theory.
Social Darwinism
: "survival of the fittest"
Social Darwinism
is a term to explain the belief that humans, like animals, compete in a struggle for existence.
Effect on Darwinism in Social Policies in the late 1800's and early 1900's
Natural Selection:
Organisms evolve by either losing or gaining biological traits.
Many rulers such as Adolf Hitler used the ideas of Darwinism as an excuse for the Holocaust.
Hitler justified the mass murder of Jews with the excuse that they were inferior and he didn't want the population to keep breeding more weak humans.
Great Britain controlled a tremendous amount of territory and spread their dominance throughout the world.
Imperialism and Colonialism was applied in many countries such as the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Heart of Darkness
They used Social Darwinism as a "scientific" explanation for their reign over Europe.

Economic Effects of Social Darwinism
Social Darwinists argued that society and the government should allow everyone to compete freely for power and wealth, with the most successful emerging on top, in which they meant themselves. They also said that government should not spend their taxes on helping the lower classes, because it would just give the poor less motivation to work harder in order to succeed.

Big companies used Social Darwinism to justify their growth while small businesses lost money.
Herbert Spencer, who took extreme interest in some of Darwin’s work, coined the phase ‘the survival of the fittest’, which became a slogan for ruthless and harsh economic competition.
The different societies had a violent reaction to Darwin's theory because of their religion, such as Christianity and other religion
This lead to a vigorous conflict between creation and evolution in public education, primarily in the United States.
