A loud crashing sound causes everyone in the room to quickly turn their heads toward the source of the noise. Describe the path of the signal through the human nervous system from initial stimulus of sound to the response of turning the head.
6.6 : Nervous System
First, sound waves from the loud crash travel towards the ear. Once inside the ear canal, the sound waves pass through the rest of the ear.
The sound waves traveling in the ear will first hit the tympanic membrane. From here, the sound waves will travel across the ossicles (malleus, incus & stapes) towards the cochlea.
The cerebral cortex contains the auditory cortex. In the auditory cortex, the sound is processed. This processing includes a greater understanding of the frequency and pitch of the noise.
At this point, the sound has been processed by the brain. In order to move the head towards the noise, the interneurons in the Central nervous system must begin to work.
The interneurons will leave the CNS and stimulate motor neurons. The motor neurons will stimulate the muscles of the neck to move toward the initial stimulus of noise perceived by the brain.

In the cochlea, the sound waves will be converted into nerve impulses. This will result in the nerve impulses traveling to the brain via the auditory nerve.
After traveling through the auditory nerve, the nerve impulses will reach the inferior colliculus. The inferior colliculus is the meeting point between the auditory nerve and brain.
The sound perceived by the crash will be processed in the thalamus. The thalamus then continues the process by transporting this information to the cerebral cortex.
