Eyes to See:
See Slumber in the Text
See Slumber in My Soul
11 Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.
12 The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.
13 Let us walk properly as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and sensuality, not in quarreling and jealousy.
14 But put on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make no provision for the flesh, to gratify its desires.

Why use night and daytime; waking and sleeping?
Because it is all about activity vs. laziness
Proverbs 26:13-15

13 The sluggard says, “There is a lion in the road! There is a lion in the streets!”

14 As a door turns on its hinges, so does a sluggard on his bed.

15 The sluggard buries his hand in the dish; it wears him out to bring it back to his mouth.”
1.) The Spiritual Sloth always has an excuse for not passionately pursuing Christ.
2.) The Spiritual Sloth prefers comfort before Christ.
3.) The Spiritual Sloth starts but doesn't finish.
Hebrews 5:11-14

“11 About this we have much to say, and it is hard to explain, since you have become dull of hearing.
12 For though by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you again the basic principles of the oracles of God. You need milk, not solid food,
13 for everyone who lives on milk is unskilled in the word of righteousness, since he is a child.
14 But solid food is for the mature, for those who have their powers of discernment trained by constant practice to distinguish good from evil.”
4.) The Spiritually Slothful doesn't study the Word to bring it to bear on the decisions of life; or doesn't apply what they do know.

Heart and Hands to Work:
Putting Off
Putting On
James 3:13-18

“13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom. 14 But if you have bitter jealousy and selfish ambition in your hearts, do not boast and be false to the truth. 15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic. 16 For where jealousy and selfish ambition exist, there will be disorder and every vile practice. 17 But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy and good fruits, impartial and sincere. 18 And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.”
Quarreling:
Jealousy
An approach to disagreement that is bent on 'winning'. Marked by unteachability and contention.
Rehearsing to your own heart, and to others, what you deserve that others have. It is the relational outworking of idolatry.
Orgies, drunkenness, sexual immorality, and sensuality
over-eating

over-sleeping

over-exercising

over-vacationing

over-entertainment

over-work
It is a life bent on what will and does please my body. All of these are making more of the gift than the Giver.
Put on the Lord Jesus Christ
It emphasizes that in contrast to our flesh, the life we now live is under the rule and reign of the life of Christ.
Galatians 3:27
“For as many of you as were baptized into Christ have put on Christ.”

Galatians 2:20
“I have been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ who lives in me. And the life I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.”
Make no Provision for the Flesh
An active evaluation of even non-sinful things for their spiritual danger to you.
1. Know your flesh generally
2. Know your flesh specifically through the Spirit using the Word and others (Jeremiah 17:9-10, Hebrews 3:12-13; 10:24-25, Ephesians 4:11-16)
3. Know the things that feed your flesh
4. Deal with roots not just fruits
5. Active discerning, choosing, pursuing, and hard Spirit-empowered work.
