The first five days after the disaster, the death toll was up to 30,000 but five days later it rose to 50,000!
The cost in damages was about $530 million

On Sunday May 31, 1970, at approximately 15:23:1 in the afternoon in Chimbote Peru an earthquake of a 7.9 on the Richter scale lasted for 45 seconds. Following the earthquake was a avalanche that consisted of rock,ice, and snow and burying the town of Yungay and Ranrahirca.
