Images do not just magically form in our eyes; there is a lot of reason behind how we see. To understand this, we have to take a journey on the path of a light ray, how it is reflected off an object and enters our eye.
Light reflected from an object is focussed (refracted) by the Cornea and the Lens.
How is the picture taken?
The light enters the camera through a hole called the apeture. It is then reflected by mirrors into the viewfinder where you can see the image you are about to capture. When the button is pressed the mirror flips out of the way and quickly exposes the film to the light which is quickly gone because of the shutter closing.
How does a SLR camera work?
SLR, or Single Lens Reflex cameras were the original type of camera. The image is captured on light sensitive film. The film is stored in a completly dark box so it will not accidently create images of the boxes around

This causes an inverted real image to form on the retina which is then dected by detector cells (rods and cones).
The receptors translate the image into nerve (electric) pulses, which are then sent to the brain via the optic nerve
What is Film and how does it work?
Film is made out of the light sensitive silver hallide crystals. The areas exposed to light get darker and produce a smaller image. When the film is developed, it is supmerged in many chemicals to produce a more permenant image.
In coloured films, there are at least three different layers of light sensitive material to generate the picture.
Similarites & Differences

~Both project the image onto a "screen"- the eye projects onto the retina while the camera projects onto film.
~ The iris and the apeture both decide how much light is allowed into the eye
~the eye's lense is flexible, while the camera's moves back and forth
~The eye continuosly captures images while the camera captures only one.
