His Expedition Roald Amundsen was inspired to go on his expedition when he heard about Fridtjof Nansen's expedition, FRAM, in 1888. His career of adventure began at the age of 15, originally studying medicine. He studied medicine to please his dying mother. He later dropped out to go to sea where he soon moved his way up to the rank of first mate. When? His expedition to the South Pole started in September 1910 and ended in December 1911 when he beat Robert Scott Death... Roald Amundsen died on the twenty-second of June 1928 What? His first experience in the Antarctic was with Adrien de Gerlache's 1899 BELGICA EXPEDITION. He became the first to travel the Northwest Passage, in his ship the Gjøa in 1903. News arrived of Peary's successful attainment of the North Pole which caused Amundsen to make new plans--secret plans--for an expedition to the Antarctic and the quest to be the first to the South Pole. On December 14, 1911, Amundsen and three others--Helmer Hanssen, Oscar Wisting, Olav Bjaaland and Sverre Hassel--stood at the South Pole, a month before Robert Scott. Where? His first expedition on the Gjøa was by Canada's coastline, that links the North Atlantic with the North Pacific.
The South Pole expedition was in the South Pole. How? On the Gjøa expedition they went in boats because the Gjøa is a boat and the point of the expedition was to sail.

Helmer Hanssen was born the 24th of September 1870 in Andøya. He died in 1956 in Tromsø.
He was the dog keeper and the most experienced skier. He was married to Kristina Augusta
