On December 14, 1911, Amundsen and three others--Helmer Hanssen, Oscar Wisting, Olav Bjaaland and Sverre Hassel--stood at the South Pole, a month before Robert Scott. Where? His first expedition on the Gjøa was by Canada's coastline, that links the North Atlantic with the North Pacific.
