Freed from Evil
Romans 12:14; 17-21
How do we live out love in the church?

Romans 12:9-13

"9 Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. 10 Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. 11 Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. 12 Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. 13 Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality."
How do we live out love to all people?
Romans 12:14-21

"14 Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. 15 Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. 16 Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. 17 Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. 18 If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. 19 Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” 20 To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” 21 Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good."
Misconceptions about these commands
"You will be at peace if you do what is right"
"Bringing consequences is doing evil / revenge"
"Pursuing justice is not giving room for God's wrath"
"Anger is the same as vengeance and wrath"
"Boundaries are the same as revenge"
Why should I obey these commands?
1. We have been loved as enemies
James 4:6-7

“6 But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.” 7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.”
2. We love because of and to show the Holy Spirit
1 John 4:7-8

“7 Beloved, let us love one another, for love is from God, and whoever loves has been born of God and knows God. 8 Anyone who does not love does not know God, because God is love.”
It is a fruit of the Spirit
Galatians 5:22

It is God's love
“To return evil for evil is demonic. To return good for good is human. To return good for evil is divine.”
3. This is part of God's redemptive plan
vs. 20
4. Future Reward
Matthew 5:11-12

“11 “Blessed are you when others revile you and persecute you and utter all kinds of evil against you falsely on my account. 12 Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for so they persecuted the prophets who were before you.”
5. Perfection in Maturity
Matthew 5:46-48

“46 For if you love those who love you, what reward do you have? Do not even the tax collectors do the same? 47 And if you greet only your brothers, what more are you doing than others? Do not even the Gentiles do the same? 48 You therefore must be perfect, as your heavenly Father is perfect.”
