'New wave' music was at its
highest peak. New music and different video techniques were used. Pop and dance music emerged, influencing even today's
music video industry. MTV arrived in 1981.
However, many British bands used the
music video to gain popularity
early on, unlike US bands. The first music video ever shown on MTV was
"Video Killed The Radio Star" by The Buggles. It was shown at 12:01am on August 1st, 1981,
and directed by Australian Russell Mulcahy, who also worked with Elton John, Duran Duran, Queen, and The Rolling Stones. Nicki Minaj used the sample from the iconic track in her song 'Check It Out'. The video was edited hugely to suit the target audience of the young people who watched MTV and BBC music video programmes.

Duran Duran - created 'mini-movies' for their music videos. 'Hungry like the wolf is another great example. Longest music video of all time at 13 minutes, 43 seconds long!

Visual interpretations in lyrics - "train on tracks", "airplane", "blue sky. The 90's saw the rise in popularity of genres such as Britpop, Dance, R'n'B and Rap. Also still popular from previous decades were pop, rock, alternative and grunge. At the beginning of the 90's, music videos were still at an early stage but towards the end of the decade, they were at their commercial and artistic peak. TARGET AUDIENCES. The Spice Girls had a young, mostly female target audience.
They appealed to their "Girl Power" audience by acting mischevious and adopting a carefree attitude. Early 1990's
The music video, directed by David Fincher , is filmed in glamourous black and white and re-creates images shot by photographer Horst P Horst, who was unhappy with the video as Madonna had not asked for his permission to recreate his images.
There is some contrevorsy surrounding the video as MTV believed Madonna's sheer lace blouse was too risque for television.
Vogue was rewarded a huge nine MTV Music Video Awards. MID 1990'S LATE 1990's In 1991, the much anticipated video for Black or white was premiered to an audinence of 27 different countries and a total of 500 million viewers, the most to ever watch a music video at the time.
This video uses greenscreen and morphing at the end much like Godley + Creme's 1985 hit Cry.
The director of this video was John Landis.
Jackson had to cut the video after controversy over some shots of him vandalising cars. In the early 1930s, Walt Disney created animated films such as 'Silly Symphonies' and 'fantasia', building them around music. In 1929, Bessie Smith featured in a performance of her song, 'St. Louis Blues', to promote it. In 1967, The Beatles took promotional clips to a new level with 'Strawberry Fields Forever' and 'Penny Lane', directed by Peter Goldman. The beginnings of music televison came in 1974 - 1980, and from 1981 onwards, music video's became mainstream.

as well as some of the most recognisable and iconic video's and directors of these decades. 1987 - INXS - Need You Tonight The purpose was to play music video's guided by on-air hosts known as VJs. Combined live action and animation

The visual effects were created by cutting up 35mm film an dphotocopying the individual fraves before re-layering them.
The video won 5 MTV music awards, including 'video Of The year' Target Audiences An 'illustrated song', using still images to the song "The Little Lost Child"
in 1894. Cyndi Lauper - Girls Just Wanna Have Fun The Specials - Ghost Town Def Leppard - Hysteria Joy Division - Love Will Tear Us Apart Aimed at the feisty adventurous attitudes of girls. Aimed more at boys i.e. with the car chase. Rock appears in the 80s - grew mainstream. More indie/alternative music and video - shot by the band themselves. This music video was released in 1997 and directed by Walter A Stern.
Not costly to make as it simply feautures Ashcroft lip-synching whilst walking down a busy London street, refusing to move for anyone.
Video was nominated for several music video awards, including three MTV music video awards.
This video was inspired by the music video to the 1991 song Unfinished Sympathy by Massive Attack which feautures the lead singer walking down the street oblivious to her surroundings, exactly like Verve's video.
This video would have been shot using a steadycam This music video was released in 1999 and directed by Phillip Atwell.
Atwell went on to direct many of Eminem's music videos after the success of 'My Name Is'
The video feautures Eminem emobodying several personas, including a mental patient, Bill Clinton and Marylin Manson.
There was a lot of controversy surrounding the video due to scenes with Eminem exiting strip clubs etc.
Was ranked 97 in NME's greatest music videos of all time.
Nirvana appealed to a teenage audience, specifically teens who liked to rebel.

Jackson left the concept to Romanek-unusal for him.
Broadcast to 64 million viewers.
Won 3 out of 11 nominated prizes at the MTV music video awards.
A groundbreaking video in temrs of technology, still looks modern to this day. Filmed in universal studios- Hollywood.
