Transcript of What If the Industrial Revolution Never Happened?

What would life be like without the Industrial Revolution?
Water Pollution
As cities increased in size, more waste was produced
Rivers in and around urban areas were destroyed as waste washed into them
Without the Industrial Revolution, rivers would be cleaner and the biggest source of power
Rivers would be more manipulated and diverted in order to harvest this power
Environmental Perspective
"The Earth is 4.6 billion years old. If you scale this to 46 years then the human race has been here for just four hours. The Industrial Revolution began just 1 minute ago and in that time, 50% of the Earth's forests have been destroyed." - anonymous
Education would be very limited, people would be expected to contribute more to agriculture.
The only type of schooling would be learning a craftsman ship.
Revolved around farming and agriculture, as well as woman's duties.
Mass Production of Food and Appliances
The change in energy has led to the chemical alteration of food
Linked to health problems
Home appliances (washing machines, dishwashers) make life less vigorous
Linked to obesity
Without the industrial revolution, food would be less altered by man and life would be less sedentary
industrial revolution
with colonies in the "New World" materials are shipped to the mother country
the country takes the raw materials and creates goods to sell back to the colonies
propelled the economy
Triangular Trade
Average lifespan/ Medicine
The average lifespan of humans would decrease immensely.
Without the Industrial revolution, new forms of medicine would never have been produced. People would suffer and die from easily treatable wounds and diseases.
Medicine would rely more on religion, traditional herbal remedies and old practices.
this was the trade between Europe, Africa, and the Americas
caused for the need for more goods to continue the industrial revolution
If the industrial revolution didn't occur then Africans wouldn't have been forced to immigrate to the Americas

With an economy and society heavily influenced by the agriculture, families would be much larger.
In order to have more unpaid workers on farms, families would produce more offspring in order to help their farms.
Without the invention of very reliable contraception, and not a need for schooling the birth rate would increase, while the average lifespan would decrease.
"The feudal system of industry, in which industrial production was monopolised by closed guilds, now no longer sufficed for the growing wants of the new markets. The manufacturing system took its place. The guild-masters were pushed on one side by the manufacturing middle class; division of labour between the different corporate guilds vanished in the face of division of labour in each single workshop." -Communist Manifesto
"Modern Industry has converted the little workshop of the patriarchal master into the great factory of the industrial capitalist." -Communist Manifesto

Marx and Engles thought that communism would occur after the industrial revolution because the workers would want to band together to gain more rights
Women's role
Gender Inequality-woman without factories or other job opportunities, woman would be restrained to domestic duties.
House-wives, working in the fields, babies.
No factories or other mills or establishments, woman would not have had a chance to increase their social equality.
Cook, make clothing, teach children and take care of the house and the fields.
City Planning/ Communities

Established around agriculture.
Isolated, without the new inventions of transportation or communication
Not revolved around commercial centers
Travel would only be to nearby towns, the spread of new ideas would decrease.

Society would be dominated by men.
Head of household, determine the fate of their wives and daughters.
Craftsman would be made up of all men and young boys, apprentices.
Take control of all the land and the economy, women would be domesticated to sew, cook and be mothers.
Social Classes

Greater gap between the rich and the poor.
Elite, somewhat nobility and then smaller classes of rural farmers, and peasants.
Without new working opportunities in mills, factories or other industrialized jobs there is less of a "middle class."
Marx believed that the industrial revolution caused capitalism
they are intertwined
capitalism is "an economic and political system in which a country's trade and industry are controlled by private owners for profit, rather than by the state."
industry fuels capitalism
Public Works
Without Industrial Revolution:
Europeans were trying to find a way to trade with India without going through the Islamic nations
Vasco de Gama sailed around Africa trying to reach India
Columbus was commissioned through Portugal to sail what people thought was the end of the world (flat world theory)
he landed in the Caribbean and thus colonization was born
the native people were enslaved and many died from diseases or aggressive Europeans
Cortez and Pizarro
Plant Destruction
The use of artificial fertilizer internally harms plants
Chemicals interfere with photosynthesis, and plants lose their original color
The leaves and needles are the first to go, then the roots
Vegetation becomes less tolerant to drought
Plants lose immunity to insects and disease
Without the industrial revolution, farming would remain difficult, but the vegetation would be in a better condition
Air Pollution
Smog brought cities to a halt and disrupted traffic
Smog would be nonexistent without the use of fossil fuels in factories
The death rate would not have risen from the increased pollution
Russia used the ideas of Marxism
Marx and Engles predicted communism would occur in a country after the industrial revolution
Russia was behind western Europe because of Mongols
Used communism to jump start industry in Russia
also based off of Marxism
Hitler used fascism to rebuild Germany's power through industry
by putting everyone to work he created new jobs and creating a workforce
industrial revolution created a surge of new jobs
in Germany the government stimulated the economy by creating public works
through construction of houses and roads it not only created more jobs but also housing for workers and roads to transport goods
the creation and use of railroads were also used to move finished goods
Fascism and communism wouldn't exists
Holocaust wouldn't have happened
african american slaves wouldn't have existed
capitalism would have happened in a lesser degree
more "mom and pop" stores rather than large corporations
Agriculture, farming-without easy transportation and new ways off mass production of food people would rely heavily on what they grow and sell.
Textiles- women would be sewing ALOT without the invention of the spinning jenny.
Craftsman, messengers, people would really produce their own goods.
Over Consumption
Resources are being used too quickly
This speed gathers momentum each year
No matter how good our intentions, a footprint is still left behind
Before Industrial Revolution, change came slowly
The use of hydrocarbon fuels (coal, oil, natural gas) rapidly increased this rate
Without the change in fuels a larger focus would be placed on water power and the horse
The Ultimate Trade Off
Without the Industrial Revolution, life would be full of hard work, underexposure to new ideas, and isolation
We would lose easy transportation, advanced medicine, and everyday conveniences
Things like irreversible pollution, deforestation, and global warming would possibly cease to exist.
Entire forests are cleared not only for production and resources, but for space to build factories
Trees are not the only victims, the wildlife is also uprooted
Factories are putting toxic gases into the air
Trees help emit oxygen and refresh the level of healthy gases in the air
No trees = no clean air
Without the industrial revolution, this would not even be a problem
