By Savannah Lo The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants by Ann Brashares Main Settings Main Characters There are 4 main characters in the story. Their names are
Tibby, Carmen, Bridget, and Lena. They have all been best friends since birth and during the summer, all of them traveled to different places. The pants traveled all over the place with them, too. Over the summer Tibby wanted to create a documentary and Carmen wanted to spend more time with her dad. Bridget wanted to meet new people at soccer camp and Lena wanted to spend time with her grandparents in Greece. There are 4 main settings in the story.
There is a different setting for each
character; Tibby, Carmen, Bridget, and
Lena. During the summer Tibby stays in Bethesda, Maryland while Carmen goes to
South Carolina to spend time with her dad. Bridget goes to soccer camp in Baja
California, Mexico and Lena goes to
Oia, Greece to visit her grandparents. Conflicts Tibby Carmen Lena Bridget In the beginning of the story, Tibby makes a new friend and her name is Bailey. She helps Tibby make her documentary, but at the end of the story Bailey dies from leukemia. After this, Tibby is filled with grief and loss. Eventually, she gets over all her sadness and becomes a better person. When Carmen went to South Carolina to visit her dad she hoped to spend time with him. Then she found out that he was getting engaged to another woman and she wasn't happy about it at all. She also didn't accept the fact that the woman had 2 other kids. It took her a while to finally accept it and in the end, she went to their wedding. She knew that her dad would be happy with his new family. At soccer camp, Bridget falls in love with Eric, one of the coaches. You are not allowed to date the coaches, but Bridget still tries to. She's very persistent but eventually it doesn't work out and it leaves Bridget devastated. At the end of the story, she's fine with just being friends with him. In Greece Lena found a guy she liked. His name was Kostos and he was introduced to her by her grandparents. Lena isn't usually good at opening up and showing her feelings so she was faced with the difficulty of expressing her feelings to him. In the end, they both fell in love with each other. Friendship Family Love Determination Bravery If you want to see more you can read The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants 2 Book Cover: What would you do if your friend had leukemia and only had a couple months to live? How would you want to make the last months of her life pleasurable ones? Quote Sometimes it seems like we're so close we form one single complete person rather than four seperate ones. We settle into types- Bridget the athlete, Lena the beauty, Tibby the rebel, and me, Carmen...the one who cares the most. The one who cares that we stick together. (pg.7) Quote Bridget looked down at the Pants, grateful to have them. They meant support and they meant love, just as they'd all vowed at the beginning of the summer. (pg.290) Quote A big part of her wanted to just stay here with them. She wanted to curl up into the smallest, simplest possible existence and let the world rush along without her. She lay down. She curled up. And then she changed her mind. She was alive, and they were dead. She had to try to make her life big. As big as she could. She promised Bailey she would keep playing. (pg.288)
