Examples of Gerund Phrases
Let me tell you why...
-Consists of:
Gerund: nouns formed from verbs and ending in -ing
Working, eating, buying, and learning
Functions as a noun
Subjects, subject complements, or objects in the sentence
Use an object and/or modifier
Object: a thing used to complement a gerund
Book, notebook, folder, teddy bear, pencil, etc.
Modifier: adjective/adverb used to describe a word or make its meaning more specific
Adjective usage- pretty, ugly, tasty, and bitter
Adverb usage- gently,quite, then, and there
Shooting
an
elephant

is sad

if
George Orwell
is there to write about it.
-Purpose: describing why
shooting an elephant
is sad
Killing
a
mockingbird

is a sin
because a mockingbird is innocent
.
-Purpose: describing why
killing a mockingbird
is a sin
Talking

about
Mary
in

church

is sacrilegious.
-Purpose: describing why
talking about Mary in church
is sacrilegious
Fighting

with
children

publicly
is dangerous to one's reputation.
-Purpose: describing why
fighting with children publicly
is dangerous
Crying
over
spilled milk

slowly
is dangerous because
the milk will turn into cheese.
-Purpose: describing why
crying over spilled milk slowly
is dangerous
-Present Participles also end in -ing and are words formed from verbs, but are used as an adjective or when creating verbs in a progressive tense.
-The difference is that a gerund phrase will always function as a noun while a present participle phrase describes another word in the sentence.
Using this as an adjective will not be qualified as a gerund phrase
For example: If you are eating the wrong foods, you will gain weight.
Wrong foods is the noun, but is later changed to "you"
Fixed: Eating the wrong foods can be a negligent decision because it can be unhealthy.
Wrong foods acts as a noun
Remember a Gerund Phrase consists of:
- gerund
- phrase that funtions as a noun
-subjects, subject complements, or objects

Why are the following not a gerund phrase?
-Eating quickly in the park.
-Eat ice cream quickly in the park.
-Eating a banana with on hand, he looked up.
-The gorilla was eating a banana.


Remember a Gerund Phrase consists of:
-
gerund
-funtions as a noun
-subjects, subject complements, or objects

in the park. (Unknown object)
-
Eat

ice cream quickly
in the park. (Gerund ends in -ing)
-
Eating
a
banana
with on hand, he looked up. (Switching noun=noun not functioning in the phrase)
-The
gorilla
was eating
a banana. (Was= Past participle)
