Transcript of Issues in the Middle School Curriculum

Holding Pen
Middle School is often not seen as being academically focused.

Middle Schools fail to educate a large number of students. (Meyers 2011).
Obsession With Testing
This obsession with testing as a measure for success has corrupted what it means to teach and what it means to learn (Walker 2017).
Peer Relationships
Are often the most difficult to navigate during this time and adolescent brains are considering interacting with others in new ways.
Hormones do alter behavior and middle school brains are just learning to process them.
Issues in the Middle School Curriculum
More Issues to Consider
You can't mention middle school without hearing about them.

Some Middle Schools Work
Middle schools that are successful share these characteristics: set measurable goals, are future oriented and involve parents (Meyer 2011).
Narrow Focus
High poverty schools have had to drastically pare down the curriculum at a much higher rate than wealthier counterparts (Walker 2017)
Integrating Subjects
Due to the high focus on reading and math, other subjects are "integrated" into the curriculum of those subjects and eliminated or lessened as courses in their own right (Walker 2017).
