New Diagnostic codes in Psychiatry

The DSM 5 has morphed away from the structure of previous DSM versions. In the past, ICD codes have been separate and not coordinated. In this newest version, the definitions are moving to be fully correlated to ICD 11 codes by 2015

Previous DSM versions were designed to assist in Research by providing a numerical coding system for specific signs and symptoms for each disorder. Like this mesh, the effect was to "isolate" different diagnoses from each other by excluding anything that did not fit the definition. In clinical practice, this resulted in a lot of NOS diagnoses that did not "fit" these narrow parameters.
This DSM 5 revision adapted the system to a future where the international community has one standard coding system. The Axis system has been dropped, and that information will be coded with the ICD system.
